What is the life span of a gas stove/oven?

Hey Budget Board experts! My oven died on me after a power failure/surge--the circuitry blew--no clock, no oven dials work. Stove still works fine. The oven/stove is 9 years old--GE brand. Should I call a repairman, or should we start shopping for a new one?
Waddaya think?
Thanks!

I would shop for a new one. Electronic failures usually need to replace the board. That could be in the hundreds.

My 5 year old GE Range broke last month. It was the ignitor. I bought it at Sears. I didnt know I had a 5 year extended warrantee on it, and called sears and they fixed it plus sold me an additional 1 yr warrantee. It cost me $322
The next week, I was looking for a transcript for an interview, and I found the old receipt, showing that I had a 5 year warrantee expiring on Sept. 11, 2007
I called Sears, and they had 2 profiles on me, and when I called for the service, it didnt show the warrantee.....It took 2 weeks of calling, but I got my money back....

Anyway...the charge to fix the oven(without the extra warrantee) was about $250. So call them and ask them how much it would cost to replace whatever blew on yours. It will definately be less than a new oven.

My ignitor went on my fairly new stove at one point. What I did was put my stove on the extended warrenty program with Public Service, I had to wait I think 60 days before I called for a repair, they came out and fixed it for free.

I ended up buying a toaster oven to use while my oven didn't work.

You might want to contact your electric company & file a claim, several years ago our entire block had a surge; we had a couple TVs go - neighbors computer went...all were paid (less depreciation).

Mine went out a few years ago...it was about 9 years old. I checked a few websites that said the "lifespan" is about 10 years.

I agree you might call someone, but it could cost you anywhere from $50 to $100 to have them come out and look PLUS any repair/parts fees (another $200-$400). By that time, you're close to the cost of a new stove (at least I was ).
