The Super Ferry is Coming!

For those looking for an alternative to flying between the Hawaiian Islands, the Super Ferry will soon be sailing on certain routes. While it may not be for everyone, I can't help thinking that another mode of transportation may make airfare between the islands more competitive. http://www.hawaiisuperferry.com/rese...s/default.html

Sounds interesting, but the route that would be useful to us this November is actually twice the price we paid for our interisland air from Oahu to Maui ($44 vs. $19).

You got a great rate which I am sure you know. The air fares aren't always that good! We flew one leg on Island Air on our last trip and at that time, $44 was a good rate.

Unfortunately, the good rate we got on that leg was offset by the heavy (relatively speaking) price we're paying to go from Maui to Lanai. We could have taken the ferry to Lanai, but trying to figure out how to get the rental car back to the airport and then go back to the ferry port was too much of a headache, so we're paying the $150 for two of us to fly there instead (via Oahu )

Yeah!!! Can't wait!!!!!!!!!

The airlines are losing money on those crazy fares, I personally don't see them continuing it much longer...

Isn't it funny how things find a way of balancing out....unfortunately. I agree. It would be a headache figuring it out. On one of our trips I wanted to stay in Molokai in the Tentalos on the beach for three days so I was planning on the ferry as well. Unfortunately, no one else in the family shared the same enthusiasm of of the tentalos and Molokai that I did. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...ai_Hawaii.html

Its rustic but it looks fun and there is horseback riding available on the ranch.

I've had my eye on this for a while. I don't fly, so when I can back to Hawaii, I'll actually be able to get around more!

Yes, and don't forget your passport and to change your currency.

1/2 hour to fly from Oahu to Maui versus 3 hours by ferry. Clearly, this will not be an option for the business day tripper. Also, with the current $1, $19, and $24 airfare specials I don't know how the ferry will be able to compete.

Nope, you will need your Costco and Safeway card.

I think you will see the "transit wars" on going for the foreseeable future. And then, there are always those who don't fly.

We don't have CostCo or Safeway. How about a used pair of Oder-eaters?

They had this ferry thing years ago and it just didn't work. The seas are really rough, it was expensive and took way too long. They lost alot of money before it finally shut down. Hopefully this will work out better.
