Buying and shipping a TV

Hi Friends:

Any thoughts as to the least expensive way to buy and have delivered a TV to an out of state college kid? The TV does not have to be anything fancy.

Thanks in advance,

What about you buy online and said college kid picks it up at the store where he/she is....I think Circuit City and Walmart do that...maybe Best Buy as well. That way you don't have to pay for shipping.

I would just buy it off Amazon... they have free shipping on most items over $25.

I'd send a refillable walmart gift card. You keep the top half, it has the same bar code as their half and you could load as much as you want on it. Let he/she pick it out

Most colleges are either on bus lines, or have taxi companies in the area. I know busses are not that convienient for carryng a TV though. Or maybe if he is a freshman and not allowed to have a car on campus maybe he has a friend or knows an upperclassman who has a car.
Send him the money and let him pick it out himself. It will save you lots of money in shipping and you will be sure he gets what he needs and wants.
I know the college I used to work at has a mail room but they hold large packages and notify the student via e-mail. Sometimes the kids don't check their e-mail and the package stays in the office for months.

All great ideas, thanks. I am debating which one right now -- and no matter which one I select, by this time tomorrow the process will be completed. Again, thanks friends.

If you do end up shipping something yourself, FedEx Ground is the cheapest shipping for large items. I shipped a 75 pound home theater stand for a widescreen television for under $40.

It is not safe for shipping as-is even in its factory sealed box. The box should be packed inside another box large enough for 4 inches of padding on all six sides.

Disney hints:
Last Disney trip: December 2010.
Hotel scam! Someone "from the front desk" calls your room phone or knocks on the door, usually after midnight, asking for your credit card number to complete your billing or you will be kicked out. Don't give it to him. It can wait until dawn when you stop by the front desk. This includes Disney's resorts too.
