The Picture... the whole story.
Because everyone asks about the picture at the bottom of our posts we decided to start a new thread to explain the "how, when and where" of it. Then we'll have a link to this thread at the bottom of every new post so anyone can have the info...
The picture was taken in October of 2001 at the begining of the "100 Years of Magic" celebration. We had heard that President Bush was in Orlando and was going to make an appearance at Walt Disney World in part to show support to get Americans traveling again after 9/11. We asked at the front desk and were told that if it were true, it would be at the Disney-MGM Studios. We made our way to the Studios and sure enough Secret Service was there and assessing the location. After about 30 mintues we were told that in fact the President was in Orlando for a scheduled event, but that the Secret Service could not "clear" the park for his arrival. Then we learned that "dignitaries" would be arrivng shortly, so we stuck around. After another 10 minute wait the people whom we were told were Secret Service gathered up in the middle of the street and headed for the exit. As they were exiting the park they were replaced by uniformed Florida State Troopers. We walked along with them and then hoped up on a bench near a stage that had been set up near the "new" sorcerer's hat. After getting up on the bench we could see a mass of people heading our way from the entrance end of the street. As the crowd moved toward us we could easily make out Jeb Bush, the Governor of Florida and next to him was Michael Eisner. They were making their way toward the stage, shaking hands and signing autographs. As they passed our location we could see the entourages, it was at the back of the pack that my husband noticed someone. He turned to me and said "there's Roy Disney!!!"... I said "where?"... he didn't want to point, so as Roy passed us he said "right there". We were amazed at how no one noticed him skirting the outside of the event. He stopped to the right of the stage, with his own little entourage. We looked at each other and decided to go over without saying a word to each other. We were a little apprehensive but decided to go right up to him. We said "Hello Mr. Disney... would you mind if we got a picture with you"? Very politely he smiled and said "of course not". He asked how we were doing and if we were having a good time. We said "We're doing great and that we always have a great time here". He asked where we were from and we told him. By this time we had our camera out and needed someone to take the picture. He knew someone would have to take the picture too and called another younger man by name and motioned for him to take the picutre. The other man was on his cell phone and held up his finger as if to say in a minute. Roy looked at him and said "These nice folks from New Jersey would like a picutre..." the man looked at him and realized what he was doing. He hung up his phone in mid-sentence. It was hysterical, the look Roy gave him made the guy understand without a word being said. We got the picture taken and said "Thank you very much". Roy said to have great time on the rest of our trip and a safe trip home. Believe it or not, as we walked away there were people wondering and asking us who was the guy we just took the picture with. My husbands response was "an old friend of the family!!!" We ran down the street to the photo store and had them develop the picture immediately (Yes, film... we didn't have a digital camera yet) To our relief the photo couldn't have been any better. That was and is the best souvenir we have ever gotten in Walt Disney World.

I love, love, love that story. I have been reading several biographies on Walt Disney lately and the Disney family seems so unique and down to earth. Roy, Jr. looks more like Uncle Walt than his own daddy. Hmmm . . .
What a gracious man |

I love that picture! I can't believe other people didn't recognize him, either! I'd love to meet him. For me he would be the most interesting person to meet who is affiliated with Disney. Congrats!
