Considering Westbound Panama Repo w/Kids

I'm looking for some honest answers here... We are a family of four (2 DD would be 8 and 11 in August 08) loves to travel and love all things Disney.

We could save like mad and do the Westbound repo cruise but should that be one of our travel priorities? We want to expose our girls to many places and have done a pretty good job so far. Hubby doesn't want to go back to Europe, so I figure this might be a good option!

Fifteen days sounds like a long cruise. Are the kids activites varied enough to keep them happy? Am I going to spend an arm and a leg on shore excursions? I do also have some reservations about the roughness of the Pacific cruising - we were all fine on our little 3 day Wonder cruise, but I think this would be a lot different.

So, with all that, should I be on the phone early on the 31st?

TIA

I will be. The kids will be close to 8 & 10 on the August repo. We have done 4 7 day cruises. I know that we will all enjoy staying on the ship longer. You have to consider everything for your family. We have made a difficult decision to not cruise with friends on the May repo because of EOGs. The kids will only miss 5 days of school with the August repo. The board of ed person & talked to about testing dates said that it sounded like a fantastic opportunity & she would book it. We are looking at this as a once in a lifetime opportunity. I believe that kids learn more on trips like this than they could in the classroom.

I'll be watching replies with interest... we are also considering the Westbound repo with two kids (3 and 6 at sailing) and, having never been on a cruise, I'm in unfamiliar territory. Not sure if we would be better off doing one of the alternate Westerns in Fall 08 (CC double dip, wheee!) or just going for it with the Westbound repo.

We were on the Westbound repo the first time. I have to say all started out well, but by the second week the children on board seemed to have nothing to do but run up and down the hallways, up/down the stairs.

I am sure for some children a cruise this long is a wonderful experience, for others just a chance to skip out of school for a bit. Make the decision on what your children are used to and if you think they can handle being confined for two weeks.

I have to disagee. We we're on the Aug Repo last time. My kids were 5, 7, and 8. They had a blast. 14 days was awesome. We could have stayed on even longer. My kids LOVED having extra time in the clubs. Usually, on a shorter cruise, their time is limited a little because of trying to fit everything in. On the 14 day, they had a couple days to really just enjoy the club activities...so what if they missed one nice afternoon of swimming. We had 14 DAYS!!! Plus...the kids had time to make friends. By the end, we couldn't pass another family without my kids stopping to chat with their kids. It was great!!!

Also...not to dispute what the other poster experienced, but we didn't see kids running around with nothing to do. Again...this was our experience.

Go for it!!

Jess

PS...forgot to chime in on shore excursions. With some research, you can do many excursions cheaper on your own. For example...we wanted to see the cliff divers in Acapulco. We didn't want or need dinner included (as it was int he package) or even seating. We simply took a cab over to the divers, bought the very cheap ticket to view tthem, walked down the stair case to a great viewing area, watched them dive (very neat...esp at night) and then took the cab (that waited for us) back. That cut the cost in half. You can do so many things on your owna nd save a fortune. You just have to look into it a bit more and plan...because the last thing you want to do is be running late to get back onboard.

Our DD was 6 when we did the 1st westbound repo and the club kept her entertained the entire time. We just did the 12/9/06 DD and all she kept saying was she couldn't wait for the Aug transatlantic for all the days at sea. Because of school we will be planning on booking the Aug 08 repo.

We want to go, but DD's will be 11 and 16. Both trips occur while they are in school. Thinking May would be better timing, as long as grades are OK. Too many activities at the beginning of the school - getting used to new teachers, band...
Hopefully we can make it work!

Have the ports for the western repo been finalized? What were they last time? Forgive me if it is posted elsewhere - I didn't see it.

We are REALLY hoping to be on this cruise with our then ds7 and ds11. They would also miss the first few days of school and a few of their football games, but it would be worth the chance to do 15 days on DCL and see all the ports. If the price quotes we get for repositioning are just too high, we will probably do the August 10th Mexican Riviera. My AAA agent sent me an email a few mintues ago saying her DCL sales rep said the prices could range from $1699.00 to $2003.00 for the 1st and 2nd guest in a category 11. She also stated she cannot give me an official quote for a category 9 and category 6 for the 4 of us until the 31st.

It will be really hard to come back home after 15 days of Magic! DS9 said that he could barely concentrate yesterday afternoon in class because he kept thinking of Disney and DCL.

I just got another email from my AAA agent saying she was told the 3rd and
4th person in the cabin would be discounted, but Disney hasn't decided if it will be one flat rate or if they will be determined by the ages of the children.

WE did the Repo Westbound with our boys who were ages 9 and 11 and we all had an awesome awesome time...if you can do it dont pass on it and be sure to get a verandah cause when you go through the locks at around 6 am you only need to look out your cabin and look down . It is an all day thing going through the canal...

WE will be doing a back to back Mexican this time because kids will both be in Middle School im May (were in Elementary in 2005 took out for 2 weeks no big deal brought homework) and dont want to take them out and we start back to school on Aug 20th...so..

Dont miss out just save and spend the extra money for a verandah...the kids and you will love it and "NO" it is not to long ....

I did read that with the westbound hitting so many school days, that there were less children on board the westbound compared to the eastbound, on the last repos.

We are going to book for the westbound repo cruise.

I was in Panama in october, visited the Miraflores locks and found it is even more amazing than I ever thought. I even got a picture of the conmemorative Disney Cruise plaque of the first Panama Canal crossing.

It has been my dream for a long time to cross the Canal in a Disney cruise, and dh said that the next time Disney did that intinerary, we would be on it

So to book and pray nothing keeps us from going.

I just hope there will be more spanish speaking kids at the kids club, for my ddดs sake (will be 5 and a half years old for that cruise)
