Anyone have a paper route?

I was considering getting a paper route with my son, nearly 10, and wanted to hear about any experiences any one's had with one.

My situation: Currently I am a SAHM and am virtual schooling my two oldest boys (4th grade and PreK). I had been working as a freelance writer, but am having a difficult time finding enough time (with schooling, packing and coaching DS's basketball team) where I can actually focus long enough to write. We don't *need* the money per se, but we are in the process of buying a house and it would definitely go a long way in making improvements and what not. DH thinks I'm crazy, but I think it would be a great way for me to contribute, at least for the time being, and stay at home with the kids too. Any advice?

I know there was a thread about this not too long ago. You may want to try and do a search.

Long hours, no days off, low pay! You will pay taxes on your "earnings," which are barely above minimum wage.

I used to do paper routes its not worth it with gas prices the way they are,you end up spending half your profit in gas,not to mention the wear and tear on you car.Plus if you want a day off you have to pay out of pocket for someone else to do your route. Most paper routes around here require you check in at 12am sometime your luckey to be home by 6am depending an how long your route is. You have to deliever in the rain, snow, ice. Its just not worth it anymore.

In agreement - dh & I looked into doing one when we were first married & the size of the route was amazing. They expect you to do it by car now not walk like the old days so the routes are 10 time larger. Good luck!

We delivered the Sunday paper only for 2 yrs. The sole purpose in getting the route was to help with vacation money. And to earn this money as a family. Well it ended up paying for our entire trip to Disney for 3 years for 4 of us. Plus all maint. needed on my van.
Up at 3:30am went to the location to p/u and put together (outside btw), started delivering by4:30 5:00am. Done delivering by 7:30, The rest of the day was always rushed. Not to mention winters, one winter it seemed like we had a snow storm EVERY Saturday into Sundays. That was fun!!
I thought it was ok because of our reason behind doing it, but, would I do it again. NOT ON YOUR LIFE. It was profitable, but, there are alot of sacrafices you have to make. Time that you have to invest is the big thing. Not only are you delivering, but, you have bookkeeping to do, making sure who paid, who didn't, who paid us, who paid directly to the office, and when everyone is paying. (everyone had a different schedule). That in itself is a pain. Plus the phone calls from customers saying they didn't get the Best Buy flyer, or the coupons and wanted us to bring them one. Their paper was put together (believe me it happend more times than you would think)
When we returned home in Nov. of the 2nd. trip we all agreed to stop the paper as of the first of the year. By the end of Dec. with all payments and Christmas tips we had enough in our account to pay for another year in Disney. It all depends on what you want to put into it.
Hope this helps.

Around here, the paper (in the larger neighboring town) requires the carriers to pay for the papers for the customers, then they have to go and collect, to reimburse themselves. So, if you have a non-paying customer, it comes out of your pocket.

At least in that town, they were walking routes, done by a lot of kids. They have an evening paper five nights a week, and early mornings on Sunday.

I often thought of doing it with the kids, to teach them the value of hard work, and then put the money towards vacation, but the fear of non-paying customers made me not want to do it.

my dh have been doing a sunday route for about a year. and i really don;t think it's too bad. it takes 21/2 hours start to finish, and our profit at the end of it all is bout 250.00 per month. that's my gas bill for the house!!!! plus we look at it as having time togther... just us.. we actually have fun some times!!! plus our paper gives you a gas money.. so it kinda evens out..( not when the prices were high though)!!! so for only couple hours a week it really isn't to bad.

Thanks for all the replies. I spoke with the rep from the paper, was able to ask a lot of questions (especially about the concerns/ problems some posters ran into... thanks for the heads up) and found out it is a rather small route. He said he had been doing it alone, and that it takes him about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to finish. He generally starts at 4 AM and is done by 6 during the weekdays (5AM to 7AM on the weekends). The only paper we'd have to put together is the Sunday paper. We'd get the inserts Friday and pick up the paper Sunday morning. A lot of the deliveries are actually located in the local hospital and research center and it's only a few blocks from our house. We are not responsible for any payments or collecting any monies, he said everything is paid in advance to the paper. We'd be making about $525 a month gross plus a $90 signing bonus after 3 months. I think we are going to try it out, if we absolutely hate it we can always give it up. My 9 almost 10 yr old (Jan) is really excited about it too.

I looked into this last year...it was going to pay $1400 a month...but it was roughly 80 miles a night...it required early morning hours and the kids would be spending way too much time in their carseats....between all of the gas, wear and tear on the car and the fact that you had to double bag the papers and the bags cost about $5 a day...taking another $35 a week out of my pocket it just wasn't worth it. You had to assemble the paper too...everyday. I tried it one night....it was a miserable experience..there was a lot of in fighting with all of the carriers there and a lot of race problems at that particular office.

I have a weekly paper route for my girls (they're 3 and 7mos., so really it's mine but the $ goes to their savings). Definately not the type of route you're considering, but it's putting a little extra cash into my DDs piggy banks and gives us something to teach them about money/responsibility with. We have a walking route in our neighborhood on Wednesday's only. If we do use the car on a blustry or rainy day, we combine trips (papers on the way to the grocery store). Not the type of money you're looking at with a large daily route, but not the type of work either.

We made our first deliveries this morning. We had to meet the person "showing us the ropes" at 4:00AM but can start at 4:30 AM or so once we start on our own. It really wasn't as bad as I had expected. It is a fairly short route, under 3 miles total and only took 1.5 hours to finish. We will be able to walk it when the weather is warmer. Fortunately for us, DH doesn't leave for work until 8 or so he stays with our younger kids. Overall it went well, my ds absolutely loved it (cuz "he's got a job now").
