GEICO insurance. Broken glass coverage question...

I've got a big crack in my windshield. I don't believe but maybe someone knows that a broken glass claim will increase or affect your policy. Anyone know for sure?

My deductible is $250. The glass repair is about $300. I'd really hate to see an increase in my premium for something that wasn't my fault (a stone hit the front windshield).

When it's happened to us (same situation as yours), we paid out of pocket to have ours replaced. No sense in getting Geico involved and having the premium increase for something like that.

For $50 more, I'd just pay out of pocket rather than get insurance involved. Insurance companies don't like "petty claims." It will increase your premium for sure.

I had to replace my windshield last year to the tune of $400.

I don't know about GIECO (yeah, I know, so why am I responding?), but I have had terrible luck with windshields, and have had three replaced and one fixed. My glass coverage had only a small deductible ($50) - less than the regular deductible ($250), and there was no increase in rates because of my claims.

Is your crack longer than a dollar bill? If not, they will want you to have the crack repaired, not the windshield replaced. Repairs were not subject to any deductible.

Good luck.

Since windshield glass goes against your Comprehensive portion of your insurance versus your Collision, it does not result in a premium hike. Now, am I 99% sure on that? No. But that is the way it has always been.

A little tip though--you may want to think about lowering your deductible on the comprehensive portion of your insurance to $0 (basically comprehensive covers windshiels, rental cars). It adds very little cost to your annual premium and if you go through windshields once a year like I do, it is sooo worth it. I had two windshields replaced last year at no cost to me. And my insurance is not affected whatsoever. I have had both State Farm and USAA with the same attitudes towards this.

We don't have GEICO but State Farm. We have a deductible of $0 on our glass. When we have had them replaced if it is a ding and let them do the repair, if it fails they replace it for free (this has happened and they did). If it is larger than a quarter than they replace it and did not increase our premium. IMHO I would just pay the $50 and not bother with the insurance company.

Thanks all. I just got a response from GEICO and they said a glass claim will not increase my premium. I will however, review how much additional the cost will be to reduce the comprehensive to a lower amount or zero.

heck, the $50 savings will buy a BUNCH of Mickey bars when we're at WDW next month!

we also have state farm

and had to have a windshield replaced..it had a crack that was 6" long on the drivers side..there was no deductible, and I had my choice of either taking the car to the glass place or having them come to the house and replace the windshield..I took it to the place..less than 20 min later I had a new windshield and no charge!
