Summer Fling at the Poly (Aug 2006)THE REPORT:update Oct 11th

FOR PHOTO ALBUM,claire's summer fling album ]

Hi everybody Well i've had a couple of days to recover, do my washing, get the food in and have a bit of a tidy, just what you want to do after a holiday but necessary none the less. And amongst my necessary tasks is a trip report for you lovely people as i know you have all been waiting for my fabbie report...you haven't?...Well you know that you're gonna read it anyway

Now some of you will have read the pre-trip already but for those that haven't I'm gonna give you the highlights from my website copied and pasted here and then I'll go from there. Photos will have to be viewed at my site seeing as my copy and paste won't highlight (the image covers my edit feature so I can't use it) but i'll get to those later. Oh yes, I thought I would post it all on one thread to make it easier to find for you and me, but will update the title as I go. Now have you got a cup of tea? A biccie or your choice of snack? have you Sky+ what you want? Oh good, now you have no excuse not to read Lets go......

PRE-TRIP HIGHLIGHTS (for full edition go to website in sig.)

NAGGING THOUGHTS

Well who would think that I'd be planning two disney world trips in a year? This is an unexpected thrill of seismic proportions quite honestly. This means 2 lots of park hours, dining ADRs, attractions to fit in, hotel choices, the possibilities are endless. First lets consider how this came about.

A few months ago, I was presented with a monetary opportunity, Well James and me had been discussing what to do in August while our 3 angels were being taken camping by my in-laws. Our first thought was to hit the family shack in Tenerife but deemed this boring. We looked at deals online and nothing appealed, I'm a city explorer with a hankering for the Ufitzi or Vatican City, while James would like a beer on a sunlounger thank you very much! Flights to most of the carribean were sold out already, and I started hunting around the good ol USA for a beach/ city compromise. LA was good (and Disneyland is there of course) but I didn't like the hotels on offer. Las Vegas is just beyond hot in August...anyway I could go on but we all know where this booking is going to end up. Now please bear in mind that James was completely oblivious to my sudden wealth so he answered questions thinking that it was me speaking hypothetically. the poor fool, he thought he was safe in saying that yes, given the opportunity, going to WDW without the kids would be great. he liked the keeping our own schedule, no cranky mood swings, whizzing around the park at first light to get back for a beer and a swim all afternoon, yes he could see the benefits.

Now hands up, who thinks that sounds like permission to book? he really was so positive.

Yes, my brain went into overdrive!! Now seeing as money is no object here, what would my fantasy vacation be?

Well, first I booked flights with BA with premium economy for the trip out. then i viewed my resort options. Now I don't know how many of you peruse the resorts board but there are some pretty fabbie pictures over there, and many a reference to a Mr.Tikiman's website. If you didn't love the Polynesian before, this site will convert you. I quickly booked 6 nights garden view with dining plan and 1 day base tickets.

Now dining plan obviously leads to dining choices which happens to be one of my favourite things to do. i was already in my 180 days so did not hold out hope of getting everything i desired. well call me Tinkerbell but yes I got everything I wanted: San Angel Inn, hollywood Brown derby, le Cellier, california Grill, Spoodles, and closer to the time I booked Ohana, Crystal Palace and 1900 Park Fare for breakfasts.

I found me some bargains for gatwick parking, the Sofitel in gatwick North for the night before and booked me a towncar with FLTours. It was all looking good until......me and James hit crisis point. It wasn't one event and certainly no one did anything to the other, it was just a realisation that we were living with a best friend instead of a romantic partner, and when you have 3 small kids its easy to forget sometimes that you have a relationship at all. we were 18 and 20 when we met, pregnant after 3 months, married after 2 years, and quickly had 2 more kids. 9 years later and we are different people obviously, it would be wrong for me to still act 18 and have the same dreams and thoughts on the world. maybe some of you are nodding your head. Anyway, we have been struggling to adjust to who we have become for a while, but enough was enough.....well james didn't go anywhere as he really had no where to go and we have been muddling along ever since. i gave him the choice about the holiday and he really wanted to go and tell you the truth, it was fine. We have no problem being friends when you take the romantic relationship away. we decided to see what would happen, maybe we would find a spark across some tiki torches Ok, enough of the pre-stuff, lets get on with the show

August 1st

Ok, so the children are packed and ready to go at dawn to their grandparents with thoughts of sleeping under the stars. I finally finish packing around midday after doing the last of the washing and ironing the day before, remembering my blister treatments 9which will become very important) my TGM printouts, my park hours...well its actually a whole ringbinder of crucial must have information took me hours you know.

We are locked up and get the kids to my inlaws about 6pm with a McDonalds for tea (well i didn't want to dirty any dishes before I left the house) and i persuaded James that we should go to dinner before heading to the airport. Where did i take him? Why to my karaoke night at Chicago rock Cafe of course, You see I have a secret addiction...every tuesday night for the last 2 years i have headed here every Tuesday and sung my little heart out. i have made a good group of friends, well best friends actually, and i couldn't go to the airport without seeing them all and having one more song. What was it you ask? "Super Duper Love" by Joss Stone So about 10pm I bid a sad farewell to my besties and we get in the car for our 1 hour trek to gatwick. Checked into the Sofitel first and to our suprise are given an upgrade to an executive room Turns out that due to our late departure, this was all they had left. What a shame What a beautiful hotel, and what should have been a £400 room was ours for £120!! thankyou lastminute.com. So luggage unloaded and car taken to the offiste parking, we settle in for the night. got to say though, the pillows were so puffy, I only needed one. Would recommend the hotel but never pay full price, no bed is worth £400.

AUGUST 2ND
Up and at em about 8am, had a shower and left about 9:15 for our 11;05am flight. i had checked in online the day before so was not expecting a big line. Sorry to say it was, but turns out people were lining up here for regular check-in. Did BA correct this? Nope, they just turned a blind eye We went straight through and had a look at the board. it was now about 10am so were expecting a gate pretty soon.

"More information at 11:05" says the board. that can't be good. If its going to be 30 minutes or so, they would just put it on the board right? Well we had to wait and no one would tell us anything. So i found the smoothie/ bagel place and we had a nice healthy breakfast, bought my books...ah yes the books.

now I had loads of great suggestions for what to take with me and I'm sorry to say I didn't go with any of them because i saw new books from my 2 favourite authors, Kathy Lette and Emily Barr. I also picked up Terri Hatcher's (of Desperate Housewives) book called Burnt Toast. i think the woman has a few self-esteem issues. i disgress......Finally get a new mesage

"Delayed to 13:05" So it could have been worse and we will board around 12:15. Finally we settle in to our seats, row 14, A and B, premium economy or World Traveller Plus as BA like to call it. It does have a nice ring doesn't it? 18 channels of TV, plenty of games to play, a very reclining seat, lovely footrest and priority alcohol Watched R.V., had a chicken dinner, a glass of wine, read half my Terri Hatcher and tried not to complusively watch that map thingie on my TV. Why do they do it? I swear the thing moves slower than real time, the plane doesn't move at all, it tortures you with "one billion hours till landing" and I still had to check the thing! Oh yes, the delay was due to a fault on our original plane, so they had pulled this one out of the hangar and done a rush prep job to get it to standard. to their credit, i never would have known. Finally landed at 16:40, so they caught up 40 minutess, and i headed for my exam...you know the one...did i fill the green and white cards out ok? i had momentary panic as i couldn't find the zip code for the Poly on my documentation and i was sure I had read that zip code was a requirement for the form. i watched 2 tired bedraggled tourists get turned away and told to try again. My palms were sweaty...i felt sick...which finger do i use on the scanner?...WAS THAT ALL? the guy even smiled at me. i must have looked suspicious with my nerves, ah well, on to baggage and beyond.

Get the baggage twice and our towncar driver was ready to whisk us away. Fl Towncars were there on time, courteous, helpful, but not too chatty. Didn't matter, i was going to the Poly

I bet the two of you felt smug waking up in a £400 for a fraction of the cost!

August 2nd Cont.

So we're on our way and catching our last glimpses of the outside world for the week, and I have to admit this is the first time I am actually excited about WDW for a while. I had been so busy organising things at home, and had been to a wedding the weekend before, but now it was real, i was on the last leg of my long wait. We looked out for landmarks on the way, the Florida Mall, the top of Kraken and the Seaworld Tower, the start of Crossroads where James remembers to pipe up "Hooters" (he never forgets where it is although he has never been there) and the huge disney casting building, yes we are crossing the boundry into my happy place. We see the Magic Kingdom parking arch and finally I am crosing under on the far right side, not for dinner this time but actually to check in The entrance to the Poly was everything I hoped for, a little piece of paradise with its beautiful fountains and foilage, an "Aloha" to all and our baggage whisked away, and best of all, no line to check in. Tina found us on the computer and saw my requests: Samoa or Rarotonga (both close to the Great Ceremonial House), non-smoking (we are smokers but i didn't want my room to smell, and we never smoke in the house at home) and a balcony. well I got 2 out of 3, Rapa Nui 3rd floor, which was actually fine as it meant we were right next door to the TTC, so could get monorail direct to Epcot or Magic Kingdom, as well as anywhere else we wanted to go We were duly "lei"d( ) and i moved onto conceirge where I upgraded our tickets to 6 day park hoppers. all done in record time and off to see the room.

Huge, clean, stunning, 2 queen beds. balcony view was of the parking lot but I expected that. Called for baggage and we were off to our first park, the Magic Kingdom ....

Still Aug 2nd

Hi jodie, Hi tammy, Hi Tony, thanks for reading so far xx

So yes we are here at last Now the best thing about touring at night (it was about 7:30pm by now) and staying onsite is the lack of stuff you need to cart around. With my key to the World in my pocket and...actually thats all i needed...we set off for the 5 min trek to the TTC. james was all for the ferry ride across but we just missed one so headed for the monorail instead. i was secretly pleased about this as the monorail is part of the fabric of WDW as far as I'm concerned. I love the announcements and, not everybody's fav, but I love Stitch's voice on it too.

"Welcome to Stitch Kingdom"

No bag search for me tonight and we're in!! I wasn't expecting to ride any of the headliners, it was late in the day so probably no FP on an August night but wanted to walk around and take it in a little bit. I mean it was surreal, this morning i was in a hotel room at gatwick and now here I was on Main St. Very cool. There was no question what my first purchase would be and i strolled up to a little vending cart on the corner by Crystal palace.

"One large pink lemonade please, and I'll use a snack credit too"

So we're in the hub and I'm torn. The new improved Pirates or Tomorrowland? James pulled me to the right and we're heading to the shiny metal of a beautiful tomorrow. Big waits all over the place, still i knew where there wouldn't be one, and I climbed up the ramp for my first ever ride on the TTA. What a great view of Tomorrowland. I wished I would have thought fast enough to get a piccie of the Epcot model.

Well we're both starving by now, and seeing as my ADR was over at Epcot and an hour ago, had to rethink to Counter Service and Cosmic Rays, where we split the chicken and ribs platter, now that was definately enough for two. we ended up donating our chocolate cake to the table next to us. we quickly picked up our first FP of the week for Space Mtn. and walked towards Fantasyland. It was packed with families and more waits but we headed into Philarmagic which always absorbs a lot of people.

Isn't crowd watching entertaining? We saw the cynical, we saw the pushy, we saw the too young to be showing that much skin , we saw the downright swearing, burping, we saw the shadow chasers (these are the ones looking for any change of light near to the door so they can get ready to pounce the second it opens). We stood back to let the masses in and calmly found ourselves a row with enough people so we could sit in the middle. Wouldn't you know it, the shadow chasers were in the middle of rows refusing to move down Think about it before you pounce this was the first time i get to really enjoy the attraction as i normally have a child on my lap or a child that I'm watching the reaction of so it was great to see the effects properly. What a movie!

Be back soon, motherhood calls xx
