I remember reading your post after you posted it last year... I wanted to let you know that I took a ton of your suggestions with me to Disney last year, and can't wait to collect smashed pennies once again this year (even though I am guaranteed to have some eyerolls from the dbf... )

I used the m&m container (it was perfect!)
I went out and bought some pre-82 pennies at a coin shop (they weren't too expensive, and I wanted my pennies perfect - plus I was being lazy.)
I got the book when I arrived at disney & filled it up with 64 pennies!!! Total cost: $32.00 (pennies & quarters), $6.50 book, $.75 m&ms (shucks, had to eat them , $5.00 (price for 3 tubes of pennies at coin store) = less than $45 for a GREAT keepsake - and you get them one or two at a time, so it doesn't seem as if you are spending much

And I still enjoy looking at the pennies. I will be collecting again this year!!! I just need to figure out a way to keep up with the pennies I already have, so that I don't have a bunch of duplicates.

Has anyone seen any YOAMD quarters yet? I collected HCOE and 100 year quarters. But, I've been to WDW twice during YOAMD and no luck. I figured surely, since they extended through 2008, they would at least put out a few!

We're going in November for my son's first trip. (He'll be 9 when we go.) He's really interested in the pressed pennies since I've showed him some that I've made at different places over the years.

He wants to get the Stitch series, and is also interested in the military ones at Shades of Green. One of the Stitch ones is at Typhoon Lagoon which will be closed for renovations when we're there. Anyone know how we can get one of those? And anyone know how accessible Shades Of Green is? I thought I had read somewhere that the buses don't stop there as often??

Is there a place anywhere where people are trading pennies or posting wants? I'd be more than happy to swap pennies with someone if I could help someone out!

no pressed pennies, isn't like pins, their aren't no trading places, sorry, give you an excuse to go again to finsh the collection

I'm soaking my pennies in some vinegar & salt right now. I just wondered how long should they soak, and do they need to be scrubbed with an old toothbrush or something? Or will just soaking it do the trick? Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the info! I got my kids started a few years ago and they love it. We collect them from wherever we go. My MIL lives down in Myrtle Beach, SC and she picked up the small size coin books for them. I had never seen them before and the kids love having a safe place to keep all their pressed coins. (I believe that they were around $4.00 each).

Why are pre 1982 pennies better?

I'm leaving for WDW tomorrow morning at about 2am. I decided to let my kids go hog wild on pressed pennies as souveniers this trip, rather than any other stuff.

Last night my son and I sorted through the penny jar and pulled out about 150 of them from 1982 and prior (we stopped at 150, since my intent was to clean them up and then pick the best 100 of them for the trip.)

I poured half of a small container of hot sauce over them and within 3-4 minutes they all cleaned up like new (with no rubbing)! I rinsed them in baking soda and water to bring back the shine. This is a technique I read about online.

Here's the problem. This morning they all have some dark (blackish) spots on them in random places. I took two of them and rubbed them with hot sauce again, just to be sure that I didn't actually damage the surface. Sure enough, they cleaned up like new again.

So here's my question. What do you experts use to clean your pennies that actually keeps them clean?

the per 1982 pennies are better, because they changed the way the penny was minted. The pre 1982 pennies contain more copper, whereas the post 1982 pennies contain more zinc. and the pennies press better with copper.

Hey, i'm not an expert i'm just like collecting the pennies there a cool souvenir, but i find the best way to clean them is using an eraser, it's alot more laborious but i find the pennies have better shine.
before i have done the baking soda method, then use the eraser on them.

After the penny has been press some people cover them with clear nail vanish, to keep them from tarnshing, now i have never try this.

also the pressed penny books work ok, for stopping them tarnsing as the air can't get to them as much.

I saved an internet article about this a while back ... the author said he'd found the best thing to use is a varnish called Varathane, and that you can get it at Home Depot.

I haven't actually tried it yet, but I want to. Gotta keep those pennies shiny!

THANK YOU!!! I am a grown woman who loves collecting the pressed pennies. DH has already told me that we will not me stopping for every machine in WDW. I informed him, we would stop for pennies or we would not stop for anything.

You forgot to tell people that they will get addicted to this :D I started collecting on our 2nd trip and have been hooked every since. We are going on our 11th trip this May and am stocking up in preperation for some more collecting.

I use 2x2 cardboard holders and then put them in the pocket pages for 3 ring binders. That way they are easy to look at and flip trhough.
