^ Nice shots

I thought this was a good a place as any to post this question, before Christmas I brought myself a new camera, a Panasonic Lumix G2 and I'm just getting used to all the settings etc
So I was wondering if anybody had any tips, especially for shooting Believe?

Thank you Shamurocks.

You got yourself a nice Christmas present.

Here is some general advice on shooting these shows:

My advice is that the most important aspect is the get a fast enough shutter speed to stop the action without blur from the motion of the stars of the show (whales, dolphins, etc.). I would try for somewhere in the 1/500 to 1/1000 range for the shutter speed to start with. You can go about getting it there in several ways. Some are:

1. You can put your camera in shutter speed priority and set the shutter speed to a fast speed as mentioned above. Start with your ISO at a low setting (100 or 200) and see if the camera can give you a wide enough aperture to get the desired exposure. Note that the wider aperture actually corresponds to a lower aperture number (ex. f/4 is a larger aperture than f/8). You can bump up your ISO if you don't have enough light for your widest aperture but I don't recommend going higher than iso 800 on your camera unless it is really necessary. Even if the camera can get enough light with a large aperture you still may want to play with your ISO if you want to make your aperture a little smaller and have a little more depth of field. You typically won't need too much depth of field though. Also, as you take pictures check the results on the LCD to see if the camera is overexposing (too bright) or underexposing (too dark) and if adjustments are needed use exposure compensation appropriately.

2. You can use aperture priority and start with a wide open aperture and again start with your ISO at 100 or 200. check the shutter speed that the camera is using. If it is slower than 1/500 I recommend that you bump your ISO up. If your are getting a fast shutter speed you can leave it as is or play with progressively smaller apertures if you want more depth of field. As with shutter priority, check you results on the lcd screen and see if you need exposure compensation.

3. You can go to full manual mode and set the aperture, shutter and ISO yourself. Again I would start with a large aperture, relatively fast shutter speed and low ISO and adjust from there. This is the is going to be the more difficult method to use unless you have experience shooting in manual mode.

Some other advice on the shows that may seem obvious is to track the whale or dolphin while it is underwater so you can anticipate where it will jump. Try not to wait for it to jump and then scramble to point your camera over there to get the shot.

Keep using your camera beforehand and become familiar with adjusting your settings on the fly. The more you use it, the easier it will become to adjust quickly.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice!
I'm definitely going to try and get loads of practice in before I go and hope luck is on my side

Told youngest daughter, "Look, that lady in pink is levitating the dolphin!" She said, "Oh, mom, you know it's wires."

The really sad part is, she just saw the show last year and quite liked it.
