Late but worth the wait! EASTERN MAGIC 1/6-1/13 WOOOHOOOO!!!

Hi all,

Here is a briefing of my experience aboard the Magic. It’s not overly detailed or even entirely witty for that matter. My life is not all that interesting. But I enjoyed reading other people’s trip reports, so read mine if you’d like. I'm still trying figure out how to post photos...we'll see if this works.

Our crew: DDad, DMom, three adult DOffspring (Jodie, Benn, and Jon), one DFriend (Nathan). I was a first-time cruiser.

I would like to premise by saying that my brothers and I are completely spoiled and should be beaten because our parents planned and paid for this whole thing. Not like the grandparents who paid for 60 family members as Cruise Director Brent claims on every cruise, but still very cool.

DAY #1
Saturday 1/6, Yippee!

Okay, we left WDW where we had been for 3 days/3 nights at the Riverside. Awesome. We played in the parks all day, saw Yeehaw Bob play in the bar every night, and swam in the heated pools until dawn. Must do’s: Everest, Mission to Space, Illuminations, Yeehaw Bob at the Riverside, Boma dinner buffet, Glowing Martinis at Kona.

On the way to the Magic, our van driver must have gotten lost because it took over an hour to get to Canaveral. But it was only his third week on the job and we had plenty of time, so we didn’t mind. We kept busy arguing, sleeping, and playing “Spot the Alligator.”

The terminal didn’t take too long to get through, since Dad had everyone fill out all necessary paperwork prior to arrival. But even the short wait was horrendous…so close to boarding…we were like hungry predators seeing our prey, but unable to attack. But eventually it was time, and we were initiated with the first of countless antibacterial handy wipes as we boarded.

Benn, Nathan, and I raced up the gangway and onto the Magic where our presence was applauded by a line of CM (crew member) greeters. Then it was up the elevator, onto Deck 9, and into the welcoming arms of Lauren from Australia, who offered us rum beverages in the DCL cocktail “glasses” that would serve as permanent fixtures in our hands for the remainder of the cruise.

We enjoyed Lunch #1 at Topsiders where Nathan ate two pieces of cheesecake with no fork.

Then we headed down to find our staterooms, (5027, 5029, & 5030). Our luggage arrived outside our rooms within an hour of our boarding the ship, so we decided to unpack and decorate our door.

Then we met Anastasia from Lithuania, our stateroom hostess. This girl ROCKS. My parents want to adopt her. I think they may have invited her to live with them. She may be spending next Christmas with us.

General Rule: BE NICE TO YOUR STATEROOM HOST/HOSTESS. BRING TREATS FOR HER/HIM. You wont be sorry. There are extra chocolates and H2O spa products to be had in return.

My two “very happy” cohorts (Benn and Nathan…apparently Disney doesn’t use the G-word to describe such folks) decided to get dolled up for the boat drill, which turned out to be quick and painless as long as one followed instructions.

Then back up to Deck 9 for Lunch #2 at Goofy’s Galley, more rum, and the cast off shindig. I noticed passengers of other ships as they gazed enviously at our outdoor movie screen and listened to our pumping party music. Didn’t they have their own party to go to? Guess not. This was the first event to ignite the elitist attitude that one develops when traveling with Disney.

Lunch #3 included the amazing cheese/crackers plate, chicken tenders, and ginger ale (which is non-complimentary) from room service. We discovered there is a charge on pretty much anything packaged, canned, or alcoholic (although ginger ale at service meals was complimentary). Then naptime and dinner at Lumiere’s where our server, Octavian, and his sidekick, Panya, awaited us. I was pleased to find that people on the Magic “dress” for dinner, at least for the 8:30pm seating. I would have felt underdressed in jeans. Most women wore summer dresses or other beach-elegant attire, and most men wore khakis or slacks and collared shirts (many with sport coats). We ate the first of many five-course dinners, each ordering an appetizer, a soup, a salad, an entrée, and a dessert.

I think went to bed early that night, overwhelmed with peace and satisfaction.

Highs:
Seeing the Magic in person for the first time
Dessert and taco bar at Topsiders
Cheese & Crackers from room service
Anastasia
H2O Body Butter

Lows:
Leaving Walt Disney World and Yeehaw Bob
Waiting impatiently at the terminal
Benn eating the last bite of my fruit tart
The reality that I was going to become very fat very quickly

More to come...

Day #2

My first day at sea ever!

While I work normal hours in real life, my DCL roommates pretty much engage in vacation party hours year-round. Boys will be boys. They would crawl back into our stateroom in the morning’s wee hours while I was just about ready to wake up. I was often curious as to their nocturnal activities and whereabouts, considering the Magic is a family ship, but I thought it was best for my emotional well being not to satisfy that curiosity. Later on I found pictures…

So it was Sunday, and my first morning at sea. I remember encountering a decision: sleep in or get up and be active? Not wanting to miss out on any Disney magic, I decided to get up, get dressed, and head to the gym for a morning workout. That is the simple version.

Here is a more accurate description of how I began my days:

If you book an inside stateroom, you will find that you have NO concept of time when the lights are out. This combined with the ship’s rocking always made my mornings eventful. First, I had to determine whether or not it was, in fact, morning. Fortunately (I guess?), the French family stationed across the hall from us had kids who enjoyed yelling while running up and down the hallways every morning around 7am, thus providing me with some awareness of time. After gaining consciousness an hour or two after my French wake up call, I would stagger through the dark to find a light switch while bumping into furniture and stumbling over iPod speakers and Prada sunglasses thrown about by my roomies. While all of this is happening, I’d hear the boat jingle (When You Wish Upon a Star) and Brent’s Australian voice reminding me of all of the things I should do in fifteen minutes, although I could never really hear since the speakers were in the hallway and I was inside my room.

So anyway, back to my workout, which brings me to another issue. And this actually happened…somewhere in my cognitive process…I kid you not…I decided I could actually LOSE weight during my vacation. It could happen! One could eat very healthfully aboard the Magic, if one so desired, AND there wouldn’t be much to do on sea days other than workout and walk around the ship, right? Score. I was totally on it.

After a walk on the treadmill and more antibacterial wipes, I ate my first healthy Topsiders breakfast. I usually ate breakfast by myself on this vacation, since the parental unit woke up too early and the boys slept in too late. But it was always a nice, quiet time for me. I dished up some fruit and oatmeal (no sugar, thanks), feeling very confident and satisfied in my venture.

Okay, fine. I had to try the Mickey waffles. I cracked. I blew it. One meal into my weight-loss challenge and I was finished. But they were so cute! I couldn’t help it. I can resist anything…except temptation. Oh well, so much for that idea!

Later on, the boys convinced me to go with them to the Singles lunch at Parrot Cay. There were no singles, just lunch. Well, no singles other than Benn, Nathan, and me. Also, one man named Patrick who was taking a break from his wife and kids. Anyway, we did meet two awesome CMs, Simone and Oscar. They were there to entertain the singles by asking us questions about ourselves. How entertaining, right? Fortunately, I am a musical theatre performer gone talent agent, Benn is a circus acrobat, and Nathan is a party boy from Vancouver. So we had interesting stories to share with Simone and Oscar. For the remainder of the cruise, they were affectionately renamed, Simone and Pumba. We ended up spending a great deal of time with them during the week.

It was early afternoon when I realized that sea motion is not good for me. Anastasia convinced to me get up and go see a stage show…The Golden Mickeys…it was just OK.

After the show, I bought sea bracelets and took Dramamine, which knocked me out. I felt a little better after sleeping. I’m not sure if it was the bracelets or the meds, but I was fearful to dismiss either remedy.

4:30pm. Alone Time at the spa. Ahhh yes. I managed to muster up enough equilibrium to enjoy my own private villa with my own jacuzzi tub filled with all sorts of yummy, relaxing remedies, followed by an intense full body massage and salt scrub from Teyisha. After my treatment, I was wrapped in a blanket and plunked on a double chaise-lounge on the verandah to watch the sunset while being served fruit and tea. Benn and Nathan took a break from the Rainforest (which they loved) and joined me for the end of this exquisite adventure. They took pictures so I could look back and remember how important I was for those two hours.

(Sibling love. Yes, I know we don't look alike.)

(Also, the view from the private verandah.)

Formal night didn’t happen for me. Apparently everyone else had fun, but I was down for the count. Sick, sick, sick. I spent the evening in my stateroom with Dramamine, room service (this time a pitcher of apple juice so I wouldn’t have to pay for ginger ale), and Disney movies.

(Everyone enjoying formal night. Except me. I’m not there.)

Highs:
Simone and Pumba
Alone Time at the spa

Lows:
Sea Motion
TVs on the treadmill that blocked the ocean view

Keep the report coming!

Hi Tinkerbell Mom!

You were on our cruise, weren't you? So much fun! I still remember how excited we all were on our cruise meets blog months prior to sailing.

About Jon, well...we didn't see much of him either, to be honest! He's not very social. I'm sure he had fun, but it wasn't with the rest of us.

So glad to see you on my thread!

Day #3

Monday 1/8, Sea Day

The sea was a bit calmer, so my equilibrium relaxed a bit. But I was still not well. Anastasia convinced me that keeping a full stomach was crucial in relieving motion sickness, so up to Topsiders I went for breakfast. She also directed me to Guest Services, where stronger pills were available.

While eating my Topsiders breakfast, it occurred to me that I didn’t see many kids around. I was either subconsciously avoiding them or I was too relaxed to pay attention. I mean I knew they existed on the ship…I could hear their distant laughter, splashing, and cheers on Deck 9. But I rarely saw them, other than the occasional 3-foot tall Disney princess asleep in her daddy’s arms on the elevator at the end of the day. That was totally me 20 years ago. Sometimes I would see counselors leading the alleged children in forced marches through the hallways. I always assumed they were going someplace fun, away from the hung over, sea sick old people…

Anyway, I have to be honest in that I don’t remember much else about this day, henceforth the limited report. I know I felt somewhat better, but still spent most of the day in my cabin zorked on sea motion meds and watching Disney movies (I think I can recite Mulan). I did see the stage show, Twice Charmed, which was MUCH better than The Golden Mickeys. I think I even teared up a little.

But other than feeling woozy, I was really comfortable in my new home. I felt relaxed, I had no commitments, and I developed a little crush Cruise Director Brent. And Paul, the activities guy. And DJ Mike. And Svet, a salad server at Parrot Cay’s single-less Singles Lunch.

In the evening, my Dad and I put on our best OSU frocks and headed to Parrot Cay for a quick dinner before the big game. General Rule for Parrot Cay: ORDER THE BBQ RIBS.

The rest of the evening isn’t worth mentioning. RIP Buckeyes.

Highs:
Twice Charmed
BBQ ribs at Parrot Cay
Ted Ginn Jr.’s opening kickoff return

Lows:
Ted Ginn Jr. leaving the game after two plays due to an injury
No dessert available in Diversions to relieve the pain and humiliation
