AP - To renew or not to renew

I was speaking to a co-worker, and fellow DVC owner, who renews his AP every year and I have a question.
What are the benefits to renewing as opposed to rebuying it later on?
We bought our 1st AP last Jan and will use it for a 2nd time this Dec/Jan. Then we plan on returning in early Dec of 2013 and then another time before Dec 2014.
Isn't it cheaper for me to just buy them and make them last for 2 trips?????

You save a little bit of money if you renew but you'd have to do the math. We normally go every six months or so, and get three trips out of each ap making sure the third trip falls just before the year is up. Then we wait the 6 or so months until our next trip before we just buy new aps. For us it works out better. I think you'd have to be going more often to make renewing make sense financially.

In your case yes, I think you are doing it right.

You are doing it the way I have the last couple of times. It did not make sense to renew for us as we got more trips by buying them as you are suggesting.

We have done it both ways.
The renewal price sometimes just add up to a savings if you are not going often.

DIS ticket guru Cheshire Figment says the renewal price saves you about 1 months cost over a new one. So he recommends if there is more than a month from expiration to your next trip, that you shouldn't bother renewing. You would have to check the math for DVC passes to verify, but I assume the spread would be the same or close to it.
