Mary Martin starred in the original Broadway musical. It was written for her, according to books about Rogers and Hammerstein.

If I remember correctly, the year Carrie was on AmIdol, she actually was singing a lot of standards and Showtunes at first, and excelled at it. It'll be interesting to see which version they use, of if they mix them. A few songs that were in the original Broadway version were cut from the movie, and a few songs in the movie were new.

Yes, I don't think my absolute favorite (Something Good) was in the Broadway version.

I believe that's right. Max and Elsa have a song in the Broadway version too, and Maria and the Captain have another duet. I forget the name of it.

At one point, Marie Osmond appeared as Maria in a touring version. I didn't see it but I imagine she was good.

I don't know why Carrie Underwood doesn't seem like she'd be a good fit. I'm a fan of hers, but her as Maria seem too saccharine too me. Any word on who is going to be the Captain?

Mary Martin, by all rights, should have been in the movie.

But they gave it to Julie Andrews because they'd already screwed her over so badly and had to make up for it. They did not put Julie in the "My Fair Lady" movie, which they should have done. She was Eliza Doolittle.

Of course, they also tried to screw Rex Harrison out of the movie, but ended up putting him in it. It is reported that when they offered the Higgins part to Cary Grant that he said he not only wouldn't be in the movie, but if they didn't cast Rex Harrison, he wouldn't go see it.

They are - to this day - kind of ridiculous about not putting theater stars in the movies. Makes NO sense to me, but I don't work in the movies.

So, anyway, Mary Martin got screwed because Julie Andrews had been previously screwed...and so it goes...

Here's a preview. After I got over myself, I kind of liked the yodel-riff at the end.

Did not care for that at all. She is no Mary Martin or Julie Andrews. And she trying to show off, which is kind of pathetic considering the fact that she isn't as good as the original singers who did not show off.

Yikes. I was prepared to give it a chance, but I guess I won't be watching. I forced myself to watch the whole thing and the riff at the end where she went up into her falsetto was the best part because she let it float. IMO, that whole song should float.

She didn't sound at all like she does on her recordings, which makes you think her voice is "doctored" up by synthesizers for the records.

She is also awkward up on stage-doesn't move around a lot-just stands there.

She sang a duet with Brad Paisley who was on a screen. That was the only song that she sounded decent on and that was because she was lip synching to match Brads singing.

Hunter Hayes was the opening act so there were quite a few teeny boppers in the crowd.

But it was really surprising how many people left way before Carrie had finished the concert.
Oh no.. I'm going to see her in March. How was HH? I am a little more excited about seeing him than Carrie If it sucks I'm going to be so disappointed. I've been to so many great concerts over the years. Only one was REALLY bad so bad we laughed thru the whole thing
