Why the rush to book on opening day?

The cruise I just booked 2 days is the same price as it was on opening day. I checked it against the sticky on the opening day prices. I have been checking the prices on that cruise for months. It has never gone up. I keep reading that the prices are lower on opening day, but I haven't seen any evidence of it.

Our cruise for June 29, 2013 on the Fantasy is $4000 more if I were to book it today instead of opening day

I was on the Panama Canal cruise Aug 2008 that sold out on the day it was released and prices went up by the hour. Yes rooms opened up later but at higher prices

It really depends on the sailing you are looking at

I also think this has been changing since the new ships started sailing. There are fewer cruises filling up early so price doesn't jump as fast on the less popular dates.

It depends on when you are cruising. Some dates are off season and do not change. Others increase by the day or even hour as noted. Since we have to book around the school schedule now, our choices are usually the popular break times and the price opening day has been the only way we could have booked the cruise we did.

Our cruise for next September has already gone up by about 1200 for the 2 rooms we have booked and we are still 10 months out and we did not book on opening day, just close. I wonder how much it will be then.

I think its important to book early to get the best price, but if you notice its not moving and lots of openings when final payment comes I would cancel and wait for a deal. I learned my lesson and got burned last September on the Fantasy, we had an inside and paid $400 more even with our OBB than people with the VGT. Our cruise over new years though was cheaper to keep the OBB on. I would say book early to get the right price and then keep tabs on it.

While cruise prices may hold steady for a while I have never seen the price of our cruise go down at any point. I check back frequently once we book a date we know that we are going to keep. By the time our cruise date comes around it has always gone up significantly. I really enjoy the anticipation of an upcoming cruise, so that is one reason why I book as soon as it come out.

Both of our upcoming cruises increased A Bunch! One doubled in price. Of course, we cruise peak season so it's best to book early for those dates in my experience.

I've had cruises that didn't change in price at all....and the next one I have booked has doubled in price since my day 1 booking.

It totally depends on the popularity of the cruise.

Also the earlier you book you get to pick that special stateroom you always like.

And the planning starts early too which it's part of the fun.

I booked our June 2013 Dream cruise on opening day last October when the news hits this board.

We took the opportunity to book a Navigator Veranda room as it was a pretty small cost difference over just an outside view stateroom.

As I look at our cruise now, there are no inside or outside non-veranda rooms available at all! Currently the cheapeast available room on our cruise is a Deluxe Veranda at about 20% above what we booked at. Add to that, it's showing only late dining available.

I had intially looked at booking a cruise for this past summer, but prices for that same time in June were going to be a good 30% higher and availability was pretty limited - and this was looking a good nine months ahead of the sailing date. So, we "settled" for making a first visit to Disneyland this past summer and pushed our first cruise off to 2013.
