10% discount for booking Onboard?

Silly question, but shouldn't the 10% discount work out to be 10% off of the base fare I'd find online (ie if the cruise online is $2000 plus $100 in taxes, the onboard booking price would be $1800 plus the same $100 in taxes)?

I just worked it out and my rate works out to be 10% off the current rate for 3 adults, not 10% off the fare for an adult and 2 children (the youngest of whom will be 12). Does that sound right? Am I missing something? Or do children get charged the adult rate before the 10% off? (they list the youngest child first on the new reservation; I know that has sometimes made a difference when I price things online)

Unfortunately I don't think I can call Disney to ask because I have a TA... I already emailed my TA but it takes forever (and sometimes multiple emails) to get any response... And I'm really curious as to whether maybe I have it wrong.

Sounds like you have 3 booked in your cabin. The first 2 people will always be charged the full rate and the 3rd person is charged a lower rate depending on their age. Sounds like the on board booking agent listed your 12yo as the 2nd person and not the 3rd, but the price difference should only be about $50 or $100 based on the adult rate for the 3rd person.

The base fare also includes some items that can't be discounted and then you add in the taxes. So when doing your own calculation you will not be able to figure out the correct 10% discount. Also, the taxes may change since they are charged as a percentage of the fare.

Hope this helps a bit.

It is indeed only about $100 difference... but it's funny that the fare I am currently being charged (not counting taxes) matches *to the penny* 10% off the fare (not counting taxes) I can find online if I price for 3 adults or if I price for myself and then add the 12 yr old first.

Ask your TA to switch the 2nd and 3rd passengers to get the lower fare for your 12yo. They should be able to do it with no problems.

Edited: my travel agent did get it fixed!

I feel bad for people who may not notice when something like this happens; the price was close enough to what it should be- if I hadn't worked through the calculations and hadn't previously experimented with adding the other passengers in a different order, then I would never have questioned it.

Good catch! That $100 was $100 you shouldn't have had to pay. Plus, it's a few extra drinks, a couple of Palo dinners, or a shore excursion...Now I'm getting exited for my own upcoming cruise!
FWIW, I received a 10% PIN in the mail (not an Onboard booking credit) and it discounted the taxes, as well. My TA was shocked and told me she'd never seen that happen before. She double-checked the math to be sure! It'll probably never happen again though

Wow! I've never heard or read of getting a PIN for a cruise! I've gotten and used several PINs for WDW trips but never thought about it for a cruise. Congrats! Now it's got me thinking about how to get myself a PIN. With the regular WDW PINs, if I played around and saved a couple of dummy trips on their website, a month or two (or more) later, I usually get a PIN in the mail or email. I wonder if this would work with DCL??? Only one way to find out...

I've seen a few other posts about cruise PINs. My theory is they sent mine after I logged in to the Castaway Club for the first time a few months after my first cruise. DCL must have known I was starting to have withdrawal. Of course, I booked a week later!

Others have received PINs at random times, but it doesn't hurt to try. Since you're going to be on the site anyway...
