Perhaps what you considered too much information was his way of assuring you convey the message to the intended person. He didn't just need to chat about cabs whenever he had a chance but as soon as possible. Many times if we understand a situation we are more prone to want to help or help sooner. How many messages are forgotten at work sometimes?

IMO, the important point was: He had to be at work at 6 am.
In order to impress upon you why he needed to speak to A: He related a couple of minor comments about his health and wife's schedule precluding him from driving or depending on her. It was not just a friendly request to chat with A; he NEEDED the information for work.

If he had missed a large number of days of work because of his health problems, perhaps it was VERY important to have a reliable cab service that got him to work on time. I hope, for his sake, he did not depend on you as the sole source of contact.

Sam, you go ahead and vent. I've been in similar, one-sided conversations, and yes, they can be frustrating. Just ask the question and move on. Even after you said, "Can I help?" the co-worker only needed to say "Yeah, tell him I need to talk to him about the cab company he uses." Straight and to the point would do the job, without all the endless, unnecessary detail. I can see how it's annoying, and how on a slow Saturday evening you might have decided to vent a bit. It surely stirred up the masses and made for some interesting reading on the Dis (yeah, it's a slow Saturday night here in Maine, too!).

Three sentences are "endless...detail"? I can't imagine not wanting to help another employee get to work on time, especially with the current UE levels.

The next time I saw 'A', I told him 'B' was looking for him. Isn't that helping?

Can you please tell me what I should have done? Should I have gone all around the building looking for 'A' myself? Should I have said something over the paging system? Called his cell phone (which 'B' has access to also)?

No, I would have added a couple of "endless...details" to "B wants to speak w you": B must be at work at 6 am on Xday, can't drive and needs some cab service info, to put B's request in context.

Knowing how expensive it is to be ill (even with insurance) and, also, how, equally, as imperative to let supervisors know that your illness/condition will not effect your work, the two things he wished information: expense and reliability, speaks to those concerns. JMHO, but I think being concerned about your job is not such a unique and unusual worry in today's economy.
