I bought a 20 lb. Butterball turkey at Target last weekend, for 99 cents a pound. I roasted it yesterday and then carved it up and completely deboned it. I split the turkey up this morning into meal-sized portions for us to freeze, and you know what I figured out? When it comes to actual roasted meat that turkey actually costs $2.55 a pound, cooked. I got 8 pounds of meat out of that turkey (and that was deboning it very meticulously)...that doesn't seem like a lot for a 20 lb. bird.

I just Googled to see what the meat yield on average is, and it said for a 20lb turkey to expect 10-13lbs. Butterball ripped you off! lol Eatturkey.com says the average yield per turkey is 53% with skin.

Now I'm going to go and buy a completely different brand of turkey and roast it just to see if there's a higher yield! |

Yes, we just get a fresh one from the local farm now. I don't like dealing with frozen anymore. I think the local ones taste great and I know it has been raised humanely at least. They really do pump the others full of saline and other fillers so they weigh more.

Another update, and this one baffles me...
There are EIGHT(8) Safeway stores in my extended area... seven of them are selling their turkeys for $.59/lb (I checked)... ONE is offering them for $.39/lb... it's only 9.6 miles from here, 5 miles further than the closest one... how weird is that? So the Giant ad says they will match any advertised turkey price, and I am planning to go there anyway, so that's my plan (I have the ads)... There's enough stuff on good sale to make up the $25 minimum spend, and that will also take me over the $15 that gets me a free 2 litre of pepsi and a box of stove top. Yay. For those questioning why we care about a few cents per pound that is only part of an overall meal... because it's NOT just one meal... lots of us stock up for the whole year at these events. And because if you do the budget thing enough, it just SUCKS knowing you paid more than you had to, even if you COULD afford it. |

I just got my free turkey coupon from Giant.
After buying $400 in groceries the local Giant gives you a coupon for a free Turkey or you can save your points for $.40 off gas. I did check out the prices of the turkeys there and they were $1.39 lb. and up.
