Why would anybody want to leave Disney property for "fun"????? Once I get there, I don't leave until my plane does!

Merritt Island National Seashore, just north of Cape Canaveral. Very rustic, but very wide and right on the ocean.

The problem with the Gulf side is that it's like swimming in a warm bathtub. (and, if you consider all the large metro areas dumping waste water to your north and west, it's actually a pretty apt analogy...)

Because there is A LOT more fun in Central Florida than just Disney!!! Sure WDW is a focal point of our fun but we are glad that we open our schedule up to enjoying far more of the area than just WDW can offer.

In truth we like relaxing around our own private pool at WH, cooking up a good BBQ and just relaxing with the family. Can't really do that onsite. DD and I even enjoyed going to Super Target shopping around and chatting, stopping at Subway and bringing everyone back dinner. Having lots to do doesn't mean being immersed in Disney 24/7. Sometimes it's the little things that help make memories.

Besides, why would anybody want to leave Disney World except to go home?
Whaaaat? Any particular danger we should be aware of? Glad you made it btw!!

Yes. We spent a week at Wailea Beach on Maui in June. In the past we've spent a lot of time on the Big Island and Kauai. Hawaii has the best beaches in the US, I think.

Right up until you actually get in the water. Then you freeze. I lived in La Jolla for four years and got in the water a half-dozen times- maybe!

Agreed!

I have a set purpose for most of my vacays- if it's beach, I like Hawaii. If I'm going to WDW, that's what I do. My family wants to go to IOA, but I'm not going, since we're staying on-site. We've been to Palm Beach and have done some diving there, but if I want to see other parts of Florida, I would rather come back and really do it right. I think the next time it will be the Keys.

Cocoa Beach - Lori Wilson park is very nice. Lots of parking, changing room/bathrooms, outside shower, and even dog areas. Less than 1 hour from Disney - really and easy way to get a day at the beach.

I got stuck in a rip current and almost did not make it out. I know people on these boards tend to exaggerate things greatly. This really happened. I spent about ten minutes fighting to find my footing, and kept getting pulled back under the water. It was the closest I've ever been to drowning, and I am a pretty good swimmer.
