11/16 Magic - My 2 week Honeymoon part 2 - the Cruise

Our honeymoon was the most wonderful 2 weeks of our lives! Part 1 was a week in the parks (see my trip report in the parks trip report forum) and part 2 was on the Magic!

Sat 11/16 - Day 7

We set the alarm for 10 am but woke up at 8 when Bell Services knocked on our door to get our bags to bring them to the ship. They came to get them and bring them directly so we wouldn't have to worry about them and didn't see them again till we got to our stateroom, pretty cool!!! Since check out was at 11 and we couldn't meet our bus till noon, we hung out in bed watching cartoons for a few hours before getting up. It was nice to be lazy!

We left the room around 11 and went to the cafeteria at the hotel to eat lunch. They have a big TV there that always plays Disney movies (big surprise) so we watched A Bug's Life while we were eating and waiting for our bus. We were soo excited to be getting ready to head over to the ship for part 2 of our honeymoon!!!

It was a very good day not to be in the parks since it was raining. Update on my cold: I was feeling MUCH better, almost like new, but poor Scott lost his voice. Maybe he left it in the Magic Kingdom?! We got on the bus and A Bug's Life was playing! LOL the seats in the bus (DCL bus) were covered with the DCL logo as well as pictures of anchors. They turned off A Bug's Life and showed an hour long video about the cruise which really got me psyched! Poor Scott was in a grumpy mood from not feeling well.

We boarded the ship probably around 2- 2:30 and dropped our carry-ons off in the room. One of our 3 pieces of luggage was already there waiting for us. When we got on the ship, the asked our name and where we were from and we were announced on the ship greeting by applause from the crew! They do that for everyone!!

Our room was FABULOUS!! I'm so glad we decide to go with a veranda room (I didn't want to spend the extra money but it was my mom?s idea and she was right!) We were sitting out there and enjoying the fresh air and the breeze while I was writing my journal. We had paid extra for a romance package that included champagne and a cookie/ dessert tray as well as ½ hour massages for each of us and a toe bag and pin lanyard with honeymoon pins for each of us. It was waiting for us in our room when we got there. Inside the tote bag (which was not listed on the internet under things you get with the package we got) was a picture frame, a journal (too bad I didn't get hat at the beginning of the trip since I had already started one from the parks), a memory book and bath stuff (bath gel and bath salts, etc). We had no clue there would be that much stuff in the bag so it was a great surprise!!

We walked around for a bit inside the ship (it was pouring out still) and went to find the spa so we could make our reservations. We went on a tour of the spa so we could make our reservations earlier and booked our appointments. We went to check on our Palo reservations (priority seating there was also part of the package and we got to make our reservations before the trip). Then we headed back to our cabin to get ready for the life boat drill.

The drill was at 4 and lasted about ½ hour total. After putting our life vests back in our closet, we went to find the castoff party. I had heard the party is usually up on deck and they play music and release balloons into the air but it was still raining. The party was inside in the atrium because of the weather. There was a DJ and the entertainment crew was dancing (so were most of the guests who were there). Just before 5, the characters (Pluto, Goofy, Donald, Mickey, Minnie, Chip & Dale) came out in sailor outfits. We counted down from 10 to 1 for castoff and then streamers were released from the top of the atrium by crew members!! The DJ played the song "Celebration" then. We went back to our room to watch the ship leave from our veranda. We saw it pull away from the dock and saw the Coast Guard boat lead us out of port. We also heard the ship whistle play "When You Wish Upon a Star!"

We unpacked and showered and changed for dinner. The second seating dinner had the first show each night so we went to see it. It was a welcome Variety Show and the senior officers were introduced. There were 2 comedians, 1 was a magician and the other a ventriloquist. The cast also performed a few sings and dances (including "Be Our Guest." Confetti and streamers were shot into the audience!

We got to dinner a bit early but had time to get our picture taken with Mickey and Minnie. Then we went to Lumiere's for dinner. It's a very elegant dining room decorated with roses and with a mural of Beauty and the Beast on the back wall. We sat at a table of 10 with another couple around our age (Kristy and Ben) and a group of 2 kids (Meagan and Derek), their parents and grandparents. Conversation was a bit strained at first, but got better. I guess that's normal when a bunch of strangers have to eat together! We met the Head Server, Christophe, who gave us a card to invite us to the character breakfast. He's from France and I spoke a bit of French with him. He complimented me on my French accent!! OUr Server was Andrew and our Asst Server was Virginia.

After dinner we went back to our cabin so Stuffy (Scott- the 8th Dwarf) could get some cold meds then we went to check out Beat Street. Beat Street is where they have 3 night clubs. 1 of them is always for adults and the other 2 are for adults only after 9 pm. We stopped off in Off Beat first to watch the dueling pianos. Then we went to Rockin Bar D. there was a live band playing there and they sounded great! Scott wasn't feeling well so we went back to the room for a fairly early night. We knew we had a whole week to party!

11/17 - Day at Sea

Sun 11/17 - Day 8 - Day at Sea

Wake up call at 9:30 am, how nice it was to sleep in! We had gone to sleep with the veranda door open, listening to the sounds of the water, feeling the sea air, and feeling the boat rocking gently. It was great!! There was a huge lightening storm which I got up to video tape around 2 am! It was a beautiful sunny day when we woke up, though.

What a relaxing day we had! We had brunch at Palo and it is a beautiful restaurant! We had a table right by the window, what a gorgeous view!! We each had a glass of champagne and some OJ (nope, no mimosa, separate glasses).

After brunch we went back to the room to changing into our bathing suits and went to the Quiet Cove pool (the adult only pool). The water was as warm as a bathtub but it was windy out so it didn?t seem too warm. We sat out in the sun from about 11:15 until about 2 pm. We went back to the room to freshen up and then saw "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" at the movie theatre on the ship. It was hysterical! We both loved it.

We bought our souvenirs next and walked through Shutters (where they displayed pictures taken by the ship's photographer) to see our pictures from the day before. We were back in our room by around 4:30 to sit and relax and watch tv until we had to get ready for dinner. We had received a note from DCL saying they were giving us $100 ship board credit for our honeymoon! Another surprise! I forgot to say that when we went back to our room the night before we also found 2 more honeymoon pins that were given to us from DCL and were big enough to wear that poeple would notice them and we woudln't have to wear our hats.

Dinner that night was formal night. We both looked fantastic all dressed up!! We had our portrait taken and then went to Animator?s Palate for dinner. We were the only ones at our table dressed in black tie. Since it was formal night, they didn?t do anything with the colors changing in the dining room. We were given a cake with Mickey and "Congratulations"? written on top in chocolate for our honeymoon.

After dinner, we changed back into our casual clothes and went to Rockin Bar D to watch the magician/ comedian. He really was hysterical! Then they had "Match Your Mate." It was a Newlywed-type show but with 1 newlywed, 1 midly-wed, and 1 old-ly wed couple (as they put it). We really wanted to get picked but weren?t. The same band from the night before played again and we danced for a bit. We had to change our watches since we were going into a different time zone.

11/18 - Day 9 - Day at Sea

Mon 11/18 - Day 9 - Day at Sea

We woke up at 9 am so we could make it to the character breakfast. They had us sit with our dinner partners, which was nice and the breakfast was in the Parrot Cay restaurant, which was all decorated island-like. We saw Chip & Dale, Mickey & Minnie, Pluto, and Goofy and had our pictures taken with all of them. They were wearing island clothes. Chip & Dale also sang and danced to 2 songs for us!

Then we went to Shutters to look at (and buy) our formal picture from the night before and went back to our room to hang out on our veranda. At 11:30 that morning we went to Off Beat to a ½ hour question/ answer session with members of the entertainment cast. It was interesting talking to them about their jobs. Then we went up on deck to sit and relax in the sun. We stopped at Pinocchio's Pizza for lunch and relaxed until around 2 pm when we went to Rockin Bar D for BINGO. We lost the final game by 1 number!!!

At 4:30 we went to the spa to sit in the Rainforest until our massage appointments at 5:30. The Rainforest was fantastic! The sign said it was a steam room and Turkish bath (whatever a Turkish bath is). There was a main room with a fountain and the scent of peppermint in the air. You cold just sit there on these chairs made of tile (actually very comfortable) and relax. From that main room you could pick 3 steam rooms: strong aromatic, mild, or gentle. Each room had a different strength of steam. After sitting in the Rainforest, we had our couples massage and it felt WONDERFUL!!!! We had upgraded our free ½ to a full hour.

We were a bit late getting to that night's show but we caught the second half to Hercules, The Muse-ical. It was fantastic! It was even funnier than the movie since they added some jokes. Dinner was nice that night. It was in Parrot Cay. Our servers were wearing island type outfits. After dinner we went to Rockin Bar D again to see the ventriloquist. He was hysterical; it's too bad we forgot our video camera that night.

11/19 St. Maarten

Tues 11/19 - Day 10 - St. Maarten

UGH! Wake up call at 7:10 am with breakfast (room service) arriving about 2 minutes later. We had to meet the group we were kayaking with at 7:50. We got off the boat with the 13 others who were going kayaking with us and went to the bus that would take us to the other side of St. Maarten where we were going to kayak. We had 3 guides: Diana, Eric and Philippe. The scenery getting there was fabulous!

The total distance we were supposed to c0ver kayaking was 2.6 miles but since the water was very choppy and we ended up weaving back and forth, we think we ended up covering more than that. My arm was killing me; actually my left shoulder was so I was the last person in the group? We stopped at a small island on the French side of St. Martin (the Dutch and French spell is differently) and relaxed on the beach there. There was a floating raft there where one girl (probably around 12 years old) swam out to and ended up getting her arm stuck and was near tears. Her father was slow getting into the water to help her and I was already in the water (although pretty much at the shore) so I decided to try to get to her to help her. I am not a swimmer but got there pretty quickly to help get her unstuck. Then her father goes there after I helped her and neither of them thanked me!!! Philippe then showed us a 3-d map he made in the sand showing where we were and where we were going. Instead of just heading back the way we came, we were going to go by the shoreline so we could see some marine life and a conch shell cemetery. They say that the natives felt that putting the empty shells back where they found them after getting the conch out to eat it would make the conchs not reproduce so they started putting them all in one area of the shore line. It was really cool! We also saw a mangrove area filled with mangroves and butterflies all over the place (they were all over the place all over the island where ever there were bushes - the butterflies). We really had a great, but tiring trip! I was the very last person to shore but I made it by myself without having to be towed so I was very proud of myself!!

We went back to the ship to shower and change and went to the buffet for lunch. Then we went into town. We took the water taxi. You would not believe the color of the water or how clear it was!! It was gorgeous! We walked around town for about 2 hours and shopped a bit. We had coupons from the ship to get free tanzanite and free diamond earrings from some of the jewelry stores so we got those for me. They?re tiny, but who cares?! LOL Downtown St. Maarten - Philipsburg - is the capital and it was crowded but great! There were so many stores, especially jewelry shops! You can drink in the streets there and we tried the island specialty, guavaberry colatta. It was YUMMY! There was also music playing everywhere. We had so much fun!! While we were waiting on line for the water taxi back (which was HUGE), Scott got pulled out of line by a policeman and was told to follow him. We were terrified that something was wrong... we were on the wrong line! LOL The long line we were on was for a tender going back to a different cruise ship! The line for the water taxis was practically nothing!! He knew we were on the wrong line since we ha bought round trip fare on the water taxi we had blue wrist bands on and he saw Scott's band!

We got back to the ship around 3:30 and relaxed and napped until about 5 when we went to see "The Santa Clause 2" It was a great movie! Back in the room, while getting ready for dinner, we got to hear the ship's whistle again! I loved it!! We left for dinner a bit early to get our picture taken with Donald Duck.

It was Tropicalifragilisticexpialodosious Night so everyone was wearing tropical clothes (inlcuding the characters). About 15 minutes into dinner (we were in Lumiere's again) they played the song "Hot, hot, hot" and the servers, then guests, did the limbo and danced throughout the dining room!! They stopped the music before I was able to get to the limbo stick though.

After dinner we went to the Goofy (family) pool which they covered over to make a dance floor for the tropical deck party. It was so much fun! The Andrea K Band was there (the live band we saw most nights) and the characters came out with the entertainment cast to dance and sing for us. We had a blast! We left a bit early since it was humid up there and we had to get up early the next morning for immigration for St. Thomas.

Wed 11/20 - Day 11 - St. Thomas

Wed 11/20 - Day 11 - St. Thomas

We woke up at 7:30 to an announcement about going to Immigration. Afterwards we went back to sleep until about 9-ish. We got ready and went to Parrot Cay for a buffet breakfast just before 10.

Then we met our group to leave for the day's shore excursion to the Atlantic Submarine. We took a ferry about 20 minutes to Buck Island, a natural reserve, where we boarded the 48 passenger submarine. We all had seats facing one of the 13 portholes on each side of the sub and we dove about 75 feet under water! We saw coral, a few small sharks and turtles, and tons of beautiful fish! It was an amazing hour!!

Then we went downtown after taking the ferry back to St. Thomas. We walked around town until around 2 pm when we went back to the ship. Downtown wasn't that different from St. Maarten, except it was a bit quieter. The shops were pretty much the same.

Back on the ship we grabbed some pizza and soda to have in our cabin. Scott was napping while I watched "Hercules" while we were waiting till it was time to go see "Sweet Home Alabama."

After the movie, which was awesome, we came back to the room until dinner time. On the way to dinner, we had our picture taken with Mickey and Minnie. Dinner was at Animator's Palette and was fantastic! I think it?s my absolute favorite restaurant ever! It was all black and white and different pictures turned into color throughout the dinner. They played songs from whatever movie the picture that changed was from. Right around desert time, the lights went down and clips from different movies were playing on the TV screens. Then the entire restaurant turned into color and the waiters marched out with their vests turned around and in color! It was fantastic! Virginia (our assistant server) told us the restaurant alone cost about $4.3 million to build! We asked another server at the beginning of the meal to take a picture of our entire table including Virginia and Andrew as well.

Anyway, after dinner we went to Rockin Bar D to see a juggler and then it was Time Warp to the 80s time!! (Yes I know Rocky Horror Picture Show was filmed in the 70s but that?s what they called it!) The cast came out and did a few dances and the crew was all dressed up. I was brought onto the dance floor a few times while they were dancing to dance with them. That was fun! Then they asked Scott to go with them and he came out dressed as Jon Bon Jovi!! He was with a group of guys and they had to lip synch to "Shot Through the Heart!" He was fantastic!! It was battle of the sexes: Bon Jovi vs. The Go Gos. Then we were both pulled onto the dance floor afterwards for the Time Warp and confetti was shot from the ceiling! We stayed and danced until about 1 am! We met another honeymoon couple, Jean Marie and Josh, from Long Island. They had also spent 5 days in Port Orleans French Quarter before the cruise and had been in the parks with the hats like us!

When we went back to our room we saw that the butterfly hadn't left yet!

11/21 - Day at Sea

Thurs 11/21 - Day 12 - Day at Sea

A lazy day and a lazy morning. We slept in with no wake up calls at all how nice! Scott got up around 10 and I got up around 10:30. we got dresses very quickly and made it to the Buena Vista Theatre in time for a Behind the Scenes presentation by a Disney Imagineer. He showed us slides of art work done by different imagineers. The water colors he showed us were gorgeous, but his presentation was boring - he was talking like we were in art class. But he gave a "pop quiz" at the end and I got a Mickey pencil and post-it pad with the imagineering logo on it!

Then we went back to the room to change and sit by the pool. We had lunch on deck, Pinocchio's Pizza again. We were on deck around 12:30 and stayed until 3:30. While there we watched Goofy exercising with the kids, an ice sculpting exhibition, and water relay races for the adults. At 3:30 we went to play the final jackpot game of BINGO. We didn't win? .

We were back in the room a little after 5 and showered and relaxed a bit before going to see the Disney Dreams show at 6:30. What a show! It was about a little girl, Ann-Marie, who had to learn to find her dreams and Peter Pan comes to help her. Along the way, she met Aladdin, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast, and The Lion King who all helped her. Scott thought they performed the Lion King song too gospel-ly and not how it sounds in the movie. The costumes were fantastic and they sang the more popular sings from each movie. At the end, she found her dreams and was able to fly. There was a movie screen at the back of the stage that showed Tinkerbell flying to the ocean and sprinkling Pixie Dust over the ship. Then all these tiny gold lights lit up throughout the theatre, as if we got the Pixie Dust sprinkled on us! It was a fantastic show done in true Disney style! I think they should make it a bit longer and bring it to Broadway!

We had gotten a notice during the day under our door about people getting flu-like symptoms on the ship and to wash our hands more often and be extra careful, etc. We had already noticed that every day (even before people started getting sick) castmembers would always be touching things up and cleaning. We even saw them painting the outside of the ship while at port in St. Maarten!

We went to Palo for dinner that night. What an incredible experience! It's a beautiful restaurant and it seemed so quiet without and kids there! Our server, Elle, was so friendly. We brought our bottle of champagne that the ship gave us the first day with our package and found out you can only get that brand on either the Magic or the wonder, no where else in the world! We finished the entire bottle, it was delicious! I know I haven?t been mentioning the food we ate but I have to mention the chocolate soufflé we had for desert here! It was incredible!! And Scott's eyes popped when he tried his first bite (he's never had it before).

We went back to the room to change and head to Rockin Bar D to see the comedian. He was hysterical! Then it was 70s night. The crew looked fantastic in their costumes! Several guests were asked to participate in the festivities of the night, including Scott... again! He was asked to judge a Gloria Gaynor lip synch contest and then to participate in a John Travolta Saturday Night Fever contest! He was hysterical!!! He won a DCL travel mug for participating. We stayed for a few songs after that and then went back to the room.

11/22 Castaway Cay

Fri 11/22 - Day 13 - Castaway Cay

The phone rang just before 9 to let us know that our breakfast was on its way (we ordered room service again). We had to have our luggage outside by 11 that night so we had started getting our stuff together while waiting to get to Castaway Cay. We were watching on our TV the report from the Bridge and it said we had gone about 2129 nautical miles since stating the trip. The weather is VERY overcast and breezy . Out of the entire 2 weeks trip (this is the last day ) we had fantastic weather where it only rained once at night or when we were on the bus submarine and the bus getting to the ship. We were hoping it would clear up soon and not ruin our last day!

We ventured out in the rain around 11 am to explore the island a bit. They gave everyone who decided to leave the ship a free rain slicker (they sold for $5 at the parks). It was raining pretty hard so they had all these rainy day activities on the ship for those who didn't want to get off. The island was so pretty!! It was kinda fun walking around in the windy rain! We decide to go snorkeling anyway like planned, since we'd get wet and already were! So we went back to the ship to get towels and went back to the island to snorkel. We both had problems, though. Scott couldn't get his goggles on right so water kept getting up his nose and he wasn't enjoying himself. I had trouble breathing with the snorkel and couldn't tread water with the fins. Since neither of us was really enjoying it and it was getting very cold being in the water, we decide to turn in our equipment (we got our money back) and went to Cookie's BBQ for lunch. The island is so pretty and remote, it truly is paradise!!!

We went back to the room to shower and pack. Then we rested and Scott took a nap while I wrote in my journal, before having to leave for our Surial Bath. The rain stopped while we were trying to snorkel and it wasn't quite as windy but there was still so sun yet.

Castaway Cay is so gorgeous and exciting! We found out that only about 60 cast members live there at a time. There is a post office and gift shops but not much else! It really is like Gilligan's Island. The boating, swimming and snorkeling area are all in a hug lagoon (we were able to see it from our veranda) and the water is an incredible shade of aqua! We didn't get to see Serenity Bay (the adult only beach) since they shut it down due to the weather.

We went to the Vista Spa at 4:30 for our Surial Bath. It was so much fun! It's a private mud bath/ steam/ shower. We were locked in this little room where there was a shower, a small room with a bench, and a gentle steam room. We were given 3 different types of mud and tons of different lotions and body washes and stuff. We had an hour there and were given a 10 minute warning knock when time was almost up. We heard about this on the Disney Boards and it was SO WORTH IT!!!

Back in our room we did some last minute packing before going to the variety show. The cast sang "Remember the Magic" which got me all teary eyed (and is getting me teary eyed as I type this and remember our trip!) While they were singing, there were 2 video screen showing clips of different scenes for the cruise (they weren't actually from our cruise, but from a generic Magic cruise). Then the juggler came out to perform and there was another performance from the cast dancers. We then saw the comedian from the night before. The next scene was a recap of all the evening shows we saw during the week. Then the entire cast sang "Remember the Magic" again and I got all teary eyed again! The scenery was Cinderella's castle and Mickey and his Friends came out and all these sparklers were lit onstage by the castle!

We went tour very last dinner on the Magic at Lumiere's. It was It's a Small World night. They did the traditional cruise ship Baked Alaska Parade that night (the chefs did it) and then the serves came out carrying flags representing the different countries they all come from. And the vests they wore had flags of the world on them!

We changed out of our dinner clothes quickly at 10 so we could put them in our luggage (luggage had to be outside the rooms by 11 to be picked up) and get to the Cast and Character Farewell by 11. This was in the atrium and was one last chance for everyone to see the characters and get pictures and stuff. Then they all gathered on the step for a group shot and pixie dust was dropped from the ceiling as they sang M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E... Of course I was crying again! LOL

After that it was back to the room one last time...

11/23 Going Home

Sat 11/23 - Day 14 - Back Home

The wake up call at 7:20 scared me out of a sound sleep. While we were getting ready, a survey was slipped under our door to fill out. The Center for Disease Control was trying to find out why everyone was getting sick. We had seen it on CNN the night before but still hadn't noticed anyone sick so no one we knew was affected. It wasn't until we saw it on CNN that we heard about the Holland America ship that was docked.

We filled out our surveys and went to Lumiere's for breakfast for our final Disney Magic meal. It's a good thing I wrote in my journal what we ate and exactly what we did each day since we had to give details of all that on the survey! We then got on line to get off the ship and go through customs. We waited on line at Delta for almost an hour before it was our turn to check our bags (certain airlines were able to check your bags for your flight at the port). We asked about getting an earlier flight since our return flight wasn?t until 5:45 and it was only about 10 am and there was a 12:25 flight. We were told that we?d have to ask at the airport and bring our bags on the bus with us! If we had known that we never would have waited on line and would have taken the first bus that left. Oh well? We would not know until we got to the airport if we'd be able to get on the earlier flight but we were hoping!

As the bus pulled away from the port we saw about 6 news vans and with their cameras pointed towards our ship. We were famous since we were on the ship! LOL We still had no clue how much everyone at home knew or haw bad it seemed to them so we had never called our folks to them we were fine!

We got to the airport around 11:10 and were put on standby for the 12:25 flight. We had to wait until 12:15 to find out if we were on it but we were! Thank goodness, we'd get home almost 6 hours earlier!!! The flight was nice but a bit turbulent and we landed at 2:50. While waiting to get our luggage I called my parents to let them know we landed and that's when we found out both of our parents had been frantic for the past 2 days about whether or not we were sick, especially since I have stomach problems to begin with. We assured them we were fine. We had to wait until 4 for the car to pick us up to bring us to our car (we left it at a park and fly) and we got to our car around 5. We stopped off at McDonald's for diner on the way home and walked in the door around 6:15 (1/2 hour after we were originally were supposed to take off).

The honeymoon was over...

...but our lives together have just begun
