You really can't do it all. We still haven't done everything available on DCL. The best way to start your planning is to read through the FAQ thread for this forum. Next read the first 4-5 pages of posts. This will give you the basics and the most discussed topics. You will have questions of your own from these, so then post on those threads or start one of your own if you have a specific question about something not on those first few pages.

Seriously, have an idea just in case. You'll need to put down a deposit but it's fully refundable (except concierge). But you'll get 10% off the fare. You don't even need to have an actual day in mind - they'll book you a 'dummy or placeholder' cruise. You can then change the date.

The Wonder is a great ship to start. Classic ship but still has it's charm.

We did that same 4 night cruise out of Miami this past April. It was also our first cruise. Enjoy as much as you can because you won't be able to do it all. Lots of activities on the ship at the same time as shore excursions, so you'll have to make choices. The 4 nights just seemed to whiz by.

After the lifeboat drill be sure to go the Sailaway Party on the top deck even for a few minutes. Of course, Pirate Night and the fireworks are a definite must do. Catch the live shows before or after dinner, depending on your seating. If you choose not to go, you can always watch them on the TV in your cabin. For us Castaway Cay was the best day of the trip. I wish we could have stayed there for two days.

One thing we didn't know is that the gift shops are only open when the ship is not in port. So if you see something you want, be sure to get if before the last night. I'm sure you will have a great time.

Be open minded. When I looked at the Navigator there were a couple of activities that sounded lame to me (baby races and towel folding), but my family wanted to try them so we did. They turned out to be a couple of my favorite memories from the trip!

Have a talk with your 16 year old about safety and security onboard the ship. Then prepare to not see him much for 4 days.
