I know two brothers who have gorgeous red hair that they used to grow long and donate. Now that they are both in high school, they both wear shorter hair and haven't donated recently. They are both in sports and I think they got tired of dealing with their long hair while competing.

We had a football player at A&M grow his hair out for Locks of Love. We had some old Ags who didn't care for his look and were making comments about how he needed to cut his hair. Then, he explained that his grandmother had cancer and had told him that the hardest part of treatments was seeing the children who were also suffering. Right before she died, she asked him if he would grow his hair out for donation to Locks of Love. He agreed. No more comments from the old Ags.

I had a preschooler a couple of years ago with beautiful long hair. He was often mistaken for a girl (he was a beautiful little 2 year old)- and what I didn't know was that his parents were growing his hair out to donate. By the spring of our school year, he had enough to donate, and came in one Monday morning with a short "little boy" haircut!

My brother did this a few years back when he decided his 80s hair band locks had to go. His hair was long thick and brown almost to his waist. He looked strange at first but now we are finally used to him with short hair.

My DD and my brother's niece have also donated their hair (both blonde long and thick).

I believe Shaun White donated his fabulous red curls to Locks for Love.

My dd13 had alopecia areata. I haves seen a few boys with wigs. Most of the kids I have met who wear wigs get them from www.childrenwithhairloss.us, the hair club for men's kids program, Pantene, and wigs for kids. They are all programs that provide quality free wigs for kids with hair loss for any reason. I believe they all accept hair donations. At one point my dd received a stock wig in a few days from children with hairloss followed by a custom made human hair wig. Since then her hair has grown back for the most part. My dd9 donates her hair to them.

My DH has donated his hair probably 4 times now.

My Nephew donated his in honor of our granddaughter when she had cancer 6 years ago. She was diagnosed when she was 8 and is a 6 year survivor now.

My husband did this after our wedding. He only waited until then because he knows I like it long, so he left it that way for the wedding pictures and then cut it - from mid-back length down to about 2"! :-( He's got naturally curly red hair that most women would die for, but it is fairly high maintenance for a guy who works a physical, all-weather job so he's kept it short ever since.

My son donated his hair. He grew it just to do that.

My DS had long hair throughout high school. He had it cut before graduation and donated it. He got a bonus point from the NHS service committee for it.

My son grew his to donate from the time he was almost 9 until it was long enough at 11. He says he wants to grow and donate again but is torn because he hated the upkeep (read - washing) of long hair. Now that it's short he says washing is so much easier. I think he'll still likely do it again at some point because he feels good about it.
