"Prepaying" at check in with gift cards?

I'm trying to figure out if this would work... has anyone ever "prepaid" with gift cards upon check in? We have at least $300 in gift cards that we were planning to use for incidentals and towards souvenirs but we don't want to carry them around and are slightly apprehensive about leaving them in the safe.

If that won't work, of course I'll lock it all up in the safe and pay towards the room charges mid-trip.

And is it acceptable to charge gratuities (from TS meals) to your room? We really don't want to have too much cash with us.

Here's a related thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3177802

We paid with gift cards and a rewards card during the middle of our stay at the Polynesian and ended up with a little credit on our room balance for a brief period. The CM was able to see the balance on the reward card and take the full amount. I think he could do the same with the gift cards but they were all full at the time with the labeled amount.

We added gratuities to our table service meals and charged to our room.

I was told at BW that they will not allow you to put those gift cards down at the beginning of the stay. But you can go to the lobby and pay for charges every few days with the gift cards. That's what I ended up doing.
And yes, it is perfectly acceptable to put tips on your room charge. I do it all the time.

Just watch your charges. Once you hit a certain number the run your card. I think it was $300. I get gift cards thru my daughters school, they take a % off tuition payments, and stop at the desk every morning on the way to the bus and take care of the bill. Its a little work but it is worth it for us.

Oops... I even posted on that other thread.

I think I'll just do it towards the middle of our stay as well. Thanks for the advice, everyone.
