Adding a passenger to a cruise

Need help from the experts! We have six cabins booked on a Christmas cruise. My adult daughter is now planning to join us with a friend, so we will book an additional cabin for them. The problem is that her friend may not be able to get the time off, and probably won't know for sure until November. If he has to cancel, would we be able to add an additional passenger to her room? Is there a penalty for doing that? I have checked into "cancel for any reason cruise insurance" but that seems so complicated and my daughter is sure she will be able to go. Thanks in advance for your help!

A couple of things - if you cancel the friend out of your daughter's room, she'll still be paying for two people in the room. Plus, even if you find someone to fill the "empty space" at a date closer to the cruise, it's possible you may not be able to add them to the reservation due to lifeboat capacity.

My suggestion is to keep the friend on the reservation. If the friend needs to cancel, there are two options:

1) do a name change (there's a fee when you get within a certain time frame of the cruise for this) if you can find someone to take her place.

2) don't do anything. The room will cost the same whether the friend shows up or not.

Not quite. For our upcoming 2014 cruise, we booked one 7A for my MIL and FIL, and another 7A for my own mother. The difference was almost $140 on a fare per room of ~$1400 -- mostly due to lower taxes/fees. Just something to think about.

OK, you pay double the cruisefare for a single, but only one set of port fees/taxes.
