I think the soda package was $35.00 for a seven day cruise. We never bought it, but our table mates did. They complained about having to carry the mug with them all the time.

I stand corrected I guess...I just don't ever remember paying for soda in 98 and 01 (our first two cruises), 4 and 7 day respectively.

Nope. They are definitely NOT donated. Companies that have exclusives with a beverage company still have to purchase cups to dispense sodas. There is some leeway on artwork, but the soda brand still has to make up a certain percentage of the artwork. They also have to get them approved (logo wise) before printing. Cups are more of an expense than the syrup and ice.

Just as a side note, the cups on the Wonder this past week were generic cold cups. Not the Disney themed ones they had on the Dream and Fantasy. Is that the norm?

If they start charging, we're not buying. Not worth keeping up with 5 mugs all day.

It is possible that they may be changing over to the holiday themed cups on the ships like they do in the parks.

I didn't know they had holiday cups. That could explain it, though they were still using the red cups on the Dream when we sailed last year over Halloween. Maybe they just ran out and are too far from their usual suppliers to bother. They'll be in LA in a couple days anyway. Doesn't really matter, it was just kind of sad to see those boring tan cups

I can see this happening in phases. Remember the old mugs in their original soda package had zero technology, they would have to have a cast member monitor the passengers to make sure they had a mug to get soda. With the new RFID mugs you don't have that problem because the machines are timed between refills. At first the mugs would be given out to the passengers for free. This essentially would eliminate the paper cups and covers, also with the new machines the mug has to placed at the bottom not near the dispensing nozzle for it to operate eliminating splash back and contamination. The next phase would be to start charging for these mugs and with the RFID chip in them they can't be reused. Disney has history of transferring technology between the parks and the cruise line so don't be surprised if this happens.

But beyond people bringing back old mugs, Some people were so Bold and Brazen, they were refilling ALL KINDS of containers!!! I saw 7 11 Big Gulp cups which hold upwards of 40 oz!! People would refill their empty drink bottles (not Gatorade...what's the one they sell there??) If you Sat in a food court for a little while, it was just AMAZING what kind of containers you would see people bring in and fill!!! I mean, we aren't even talking 10 year old mugs!! Sad but true!! It's no wonder Disney went to RFID. Only thing is ice tea and coffee still don't require the chip...

And it costs more for the paper cup generally than the serving of soda itself.
