If we wanted to adhere to tradition, George Lucas would still be in charge - and I think we can agree that we really don't want that.

Good point...

But a yield of Star Wars to a comic book flick (even a good one... But the Avengers still was citizen Kane crossed with Ben hur... Like the goofy joss Whedon groupies make it out to be)
Still speaks volumes about where Star Wars is...

In the 90's...it literally was the phantom menace...
The franchise that no question would rule the box office, blockbuster, and every store on earth...but the wheels came off that... Even if it still rakes.

Anybody remember the Austin powers: the spy who shagged me trailers?
"If you see one movie this summer... It should be Star Wars... But if you see two..."

Toy story 2 had Star Wars jokes on the trailers too... As did everybody else.

This is just ridiculous if you think about it. Not that a Star Wars movie was bad... But how did anybody allow them to make the second one or allow any of the actors Into the third?

Spielberg and Coppola should have walked from the theater to Skywalker ranch and staged an intervention.

But again...just my take

I don't think of it as yielding to a lesser (or perhaps not) movie, but more perhaps about which would be more successful where. The holidays have been a staple of franchise movies for years now. Star Wars could now take that slot from The Hobbit, which has the next two. Right now I believe the only holiday competition will come from the conclusion of The Hunger Games, which would likely open a few weeks before.

It can also depend on what other releases surround it. They may feel that The Avengers can steal away viewers from surrounding competition in May but struggle more in December, or vice versa.

The movie release landscape has changed a bit in 10 years. Adhering to a tradition that isn't supported by the research is poor business.

Disney/Lucasfilm is going to schedule it where they best see it fit.

Valid points as always... And of course the winter is more "blockbuster friendly" than it used to be and summer seems to be a war of cgi
Attrition now...

But...big but...I think this is more nuts and bolts.

Disney sees billion dollar avengers take which was a tad surprising and slots it in the still dominant summer
Spot over the three "disappointing" 400-500 million dollar movies that were playing with nothing but house money going in.

Maybe it's just me ( or guys like Howard stern... Who I'm gonna quote):
"I think the biggest disappointment of my adult
Life is that George Lucas can't make a decent Star Wars movie after he had 20 years to think about it"
I know... Harping... I'll stop and go back to pummeling free dining, character meets, saratoga (softening on that a little), expedition Everest, and fifth park rumors now

I think Howard, in a roundabout way, hit the nail on the head. George had too much time. His broad story line for the prequels worked; corrupt government, secretive foe working in the shadows, and a fallen hero. The problems laid in the execution. The script was stiff and as a result so was the acting. There was the overuse of CGI, especially in the first film. Adding Boba Fett to the clone story line was just ridiculous. As was Anakin's immaculate birth. There's probably a dozen other things we could come up with. That's just off the top of my head before my morning cup of coffee.

You are correct. Also the creation of the new resorts with desirable locations waters the effect of the howard johnsons. I'm not sure which category Aulani fits in to though. Sorry off topic.

Touché...

Saratoga's problem is the point chart. Ripoff for the points

If it was changes to a based 10 points...it then becomes attractive

OK, back on topic.

Rumors are flying on a possible new title for Episode 7. "A New Dawn." My guess is this is a working title until a butt load of other ideas are run through the marketing department.

http://talkbacker.com/movies/exclusi...isode-7/id=698

His "source" also claims the Millenium Falcon will be used. If Han is in the movie this is a no brainer. The other claim is that the Cantina will be used as a set. Not sure if I believe that one at all. I do figure that Tatooine will be in the new film because it is in 5 of the first 6 so throwing the cantina in isn't a big stretch. Someone in the comments section said Disney signed a contract to film in New Mexico. That's a new one to me and is most likely a false rumor.

Not the title I would use. If you think about it the whole Anakin Story arc was about bringing balance to the force. Episode 1 the Jedi were in power and the scales were tipped in their favor. By episode 3 it was more in the sith's favor. At the end of episode 6 the sith were gone and there was just one Jedi who was not trained as the others and didn't have to follow the outdated traditions that in my opinion were what brought the Jedi down.

This new chapter to the saga should build on a new imbalance and the title should reflect that.

If you think about it, Anakin did bring balance. We only know of two surviving Jedi, to match the two Sith...

Did anyone see the new Variety article? In it Disney CFO Jay Rasulo talks about Star Wars being an "evergreen property." He also hinted at a Star Wars movie every year starting in 2015. He also said they were expanding
marketing opportunities.

They said they plan for a movie every year when they made the initial announcements, but they wouldn't all be "saga" stories. There are three already in the works, Episode VII and two others, but no details on them either.

I like the idea of expanding into housewares...I just told DW we can get a new Darth Mixer. But I'm still waiting for my lightsaber bread knife/toaster:
