Tipping

My mother, at age 76, is preparing for her first cruise. Neither she nor I are sure what services to tip or how much the tip should be so I thought I would come here for some advice. She is Alaska bound in a couple of weeks and I would appreciate any info you could provide.

It works out to $12 per person per day. Here is a link to the Disney Web site that explains it.

https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/p...ces/gratuities

Disney will add it to your bill ahead of time
You will get a tip envelope at the end of the cruise. If you want to add more or hopefully( not less) go to guest services and they can adjust your tips. Or if you just want to add a little extra cash to the envelope you can.

Have a great cruise

Her onboard account will have the tips automatically added to it. This is $12.00 per day (for her). This charge will be per person in the room. That $12.00 breaks out to $4.00 per day to the stateroom host; $4.00 per day to the dining room server; $3.00 per day to the asst server; and $1.00 per day to the head server.

At the end of the cruise she will receive tip envelopes (with position titles on them) and tip coupons. The coupons are 2-part. They will indicate the name, position, and amount of each tip (for the length of the cruise). She will tear the coupon in half, placing 1/2 in the corresponding envelope to hand out. If she wishes, she can add additional cash tips at this time. No additional tip is necessary, it's only if she wants to tip more.

Other tips would be for baggage porters at the terminal, room service delivery person, and excursion guides/drivers (if she wishes - entirely voluntary).

Drinks purchased onboard (alcoholic, or not) from the bars/lounges/drink servers poolside and in the theatre will have an automatic 15% gratuity added.

Standard tips are well covered in other posters and informative threads and on DCL website.

As for your question, though, what services to tip and how much are great questions. Of course, tipping is "voluntary" but it's really appropriate to tip these people; the amount is VERY much a personal decision. I'll put some suggested amounts here and you'll probably get other ideas, but at least here are some amounts to start.

Waitstaff: Above the automatic tip, we generally add $10-$20 each
Room steward: We generally add $10 to the automatic tip
Palo: No built in gratuity (really), typically $10 each
Room service: At least $2, up to $5 for a large order
Drink service: The auto 15% doesn't seem like much for a cheap drink or coffee, but they get a lot of them so their income is reasonable, in my view. However, we will add $2 per drink for a great server
Spa: They are now adding on a large tip automatically; we won't go over that
Baggage handlers on arrival: $1.50 per item
Baggage handlers on departure: $2.00 per item
Onshore local tour guides: Generally $5 each
Children's programs: they don't accept tips

It seems like a lot, and overwhelming, but it isn't really. Other than the baggage handlers and room service, everything else is automatically added or billed, and it would be reasonable for you to just go with those amounts.
