Pedro Miguel Lock

After lunch we went to the 4th deck to join mom and dad.

From the 4th deck we were protected from the rain and had a fun view - closer to the water level.

A pilot boat arrives to begin escorting us to the Pedro Miguel Locks.

Locals came out in droves to see our ship and the Wonder played her "when you wish upon a star" horn to cheering onlookers.

Minnie joined us at the rail and stood on tip toes to wave to the children on shore. In return, people in their cars honked and waved.

From the 4th deck, DSis and I ran down to the third deck atrium windows to see what it was like to see the inside of the walls of the locks.

When we rose we came back to the 4th deck to watch as we passed through the canal along with another cargo ship.

Was fun to stand and wave to people working on the canal and on the cargo ship.

according to the log we got at the end of the cruise, we went into the Pedro Miguel Lock at 1:53pm and exited the lock at 2:38pm.

Panamax!

It's been so much fun seeing your photos and remembering what a wonderful trip this was.

You did a great job showing how little room there was on either side of the canal as the Wonder went through. I didn't see any mention of my favorite new word: Panamax. If a ship can fit through the canal without a lot of extra space it is called Panamax.

We now use this word a lot, though probably not in its true sense. Such as, I can't believe I ate all that food--I'm Panamax! Or, since I did eat that much food, these pants are Panamax!

Keep up the great report...

I'm just floored to at how little space there isbetween the ship and the walls of the locks. Talk about control and everything lining up just right.

Love the Minnie pics!

You probably mentioned it, but who was the Captain for this sailing?

Captain Fabian was our captain. The "regular" captain on the Wonder at the time was Captain Thor, but he reportedly took some time off for family reasons--I think it was to attend his son's graduation. We were told that Captain Fabian was gracious enough to fill in. It's nice to know that the captains are willing to help each other when needed.

Awwh. How sweet. The reason why I asked is because my DH is an absolute fan of Captain Thord (sp?). He is so welcoming and on our last 7-day cruise he and his officers really made an effort to get to know the passengers. We didn't experience that this time on the Magic and we missed Captain Thord (sp?) and his officers immensely.

I am pretty sure your spelling of Thord is correct. Somehow my being a fan of "The Avengers" got me thinking of Thor, Ironman, the Hulk, etc.

Last Lock! - Miraflores

DSis and I went up to our stateroom to shower/relax and sit out on our verandah for the rest of the afternoon.

At 2:51pm we entered the Miraflores Locks.

At each lock, the men would have to row out to the ship with the ropes to connect us to the locomotives/mules.

It was fun experiencing each of the locks from a different spot on the ship.

Here's Captain Fabian in action -

it was still raining

A Cargo ship joins us in the Miraflores

closer

Was so fun being eye level to these massive cargo ships. And so close! And how fun was it to see these tough cargo ship workers get so excited and even dance to our ship's horn "when you wish upon a star".

they are dancing

come on, smile!

another crazy view out our window!

so great for perspective

looking straight across from our verandah

It is so close to the walls of the canal - Panamax that we are - that we do infact "bump".

Think this was the - "uh, how bad is it" call
