Lone Ranger playing on your cruise? Don't miss it

If the Lone Ranger is playing on your next cruise don't skip it due to the poor job that has been done promoting this film. My wife and I just got back from a sneak preview of Disney's new "The Lone Ranger" (opening July 3), starring Johnny Depp, with Armie Hammer as the masked man. Depp plays his usual deadpan character, often in closeup. He has to go deadpan because the makeup would mask any emotion except wide-eyed surprise or a sidelong glance of distrust. He channels Dustin Hoffman from "Little Big Man" as he talks to wide-eyed boy in a Lone Ranger costume at a 1930s carnival sideshow. Forgetful, he recounts the story of how he and a recently deputized Texas Ranger (Hammer) saved the west from a greedy railroad baron and a bad-as-snakespit outlaw. Oh, the twists. If he's not channeling Hoffman as the ancient Tonto, it's the best of Buster Keaton in his never-surprised physical slapstick. The grand American West scenery and swelling music reminded us of the great Westerns of the '50s and '60s, but with the kind of moving-camera work and sharp focus that was impossible in those decades. Whip-cracking action, shot full of humor tempered with pathos, this is a summer film for fans of all ages. There are doodoo jokes for the kids but no smarmy love scenes; emotional -- even sometimes shocking -- action for teens, and enough character motivation to keep adults alert. "Monsters University" may be getting the attention now, but we hope Disney's promotional department gives this film its due -- it is fantastic.

Thanks for the review! We plan to go this weekend I agree that Disney has dropped the ball on promotions thus far with this film. All I know is Johnny Depp is in it and so I go It's a bonus if it's a good movie!

I've always wondered: Why is the character called the Lone Ranger when he has a sidekick?

I think he was referred to as the Lone Ranger because he was the lone ranger who lived - sorta. This movie does take a lot of license from the original story line, some for the better, some just silly. And, if you start thinking about it, you'll leave with more questions then answers. The movie starts in 1933, Tonto is telling the story to a little boy. Tonto is very old and more then a little off. That said, it was a good movie.

If I remember the legend correctly (and I'm old enough to be a legend moiself) he's the only surviving Texas Ranger and wears a mask so he won't be recognized as a Ranger.
