House of Blues & Cuban Cafe?

Hi everyone, just finished booking all my adr's. The 2 restaurants on my list which I have never tried are both downtown, House of blues and Bongo's Cuban cafe. Anyone have any good or poor experiences at any of these? I would love to hear, Thanks!

DH and I really liked Bongo's (I assume that's what you mean by Cuban cafe). We both had different meat dishes with plantains. I had the flan de queso for dessert, and it was phenomenal! We were pleasantly surprised by this meal and do plan on returning.

Our Ratings of Bongo's Cuban Cafe: (1/7/2013)
. . . food price value: C
. . . food quality: C
. . . food quantity per serving: C
. . . food prep speed: B
. . . food selection: C
. . . seating quantity: C
. . . seating comfort: C
. . . eatery atmosphere: C
. . . eatery convenience: C
. . . staff friendliness: C
. . . staff attentiveness: D
. . . character interaction: n/a

NOTE: The food is about average, and not too far off the going rate
for pricing. However, the service leaves far too much to be desired -
bordering on rude. Better to chose Mexican beer than mixed drinks,
as the drinks are quite disgusting. The outdoor QS serving window is
good. We are fond of going to a noon-matinee at the AMC movies
after a sandwich from the serving window. The good thing is that
the eatery is seldom over crowded and easy to get a seat without
an ADR. (This could also tell you something about the quality.)

NOTE: The new menu is seriously disappointing. All HOB websites
claim new menus by Aaron Sanchez. Not sure if this is bragging or an
apology.
It is supposed to be more "Southwestern USA" and items are
said to be bold-sassy-contemporary. They sadly miss. Additionally, HOB
at Disney used to be very reasonable pricing is now overpriced for what
is on the plate. It is still loud inside, as no acoustical aids. On the good
side, the Sunday Gospel Lunch is great for both music and food (make
ressies!)

I LOVED House of Blues...I had the shrimp & grits and the bread pudding and everything was delicious. It was my favorite meal of the trip!

Bongo's - went several years ago, before I knew what good Cuban food was. And it was still disappointing! Very bland food (no salt or spices that I could discern), and an excruciatingly long wait for food after ordering. But the absolute worst part was the service. Groups of servers standing around trying to socialize and primp, while tables were neglected (and not just ours). The service alone was bad enough that we have not been back in several years.

HOB - (Loud sigh here) - What used to be a standby favorite at DTD has fallen mightily since they revamped the menu. Chef Aaron Sanchez has taken off many of the standards that made HOB what it was, and replaced them with a glorified tapas menu (in the appetizer section). I don't know what street tacos have to do with Blues, so maybe someone can tell me. Our last visit here was right after the menu revamp, and it was sorely disappointing. Not only did the menu changes NOT make it better, but the removal of several of the traditional HOB items weakened the menu overall. And the previous pricing was a good value. It appears portion size has been reduced as well. No longer a good value, and we're not in any hurry to return.

There are many better options in the DTD area. For example, I finally tried Paradiso 37 last Fall, and consider that to be a better option than HOB with the revamped menu.

Add me to the list of people who think that Aaron Sanchez took HOB in the wrong direction. (More accuratley, HOB went in the wrong direction when it partnered with Aaron Sanchez who is probably the least accomplished, least impressive "celebrity chef" that I have ever encountered). As for comparing it to Bongo's, I actually haven't eaten there in so long that I don't think my opinion is valid any more. But if I were making the choice, I would try the "unknown" of Bongo's over the "known" of HOB (other than Sunday Brunch) to give Bongo's a chance to impress in this decade because it certainly didn't in the last.

We ate at Bongo's recently for lunch and it was totally gross! Bland and dry Cuban sandwich (seriously how do you mess that up?), rice with black beans also dry and bland. Plus, I agree with several of the previous posters. The place was almost completely empty and the wait staff was unfriendly and the food took forever!!
