Check in for cruise at your Disney resort?

I thought I had read somewhere that if you're staying at a Disney resort and heading straight to a cruise, you would be checked in for your cruise at the resort when you checked in.

Is this still the case, or was this just when they offered land/sea packages?

We will be staying at Old Key West (on vacation club points) 1 night before and 3 nights after the cruise, and using Disney transfers to/from the port.

They use to do check in at MCO, but I don't recall it being offered at any resorts. All check ins are currently done at the cruise terminal.

I think with the old Land & Sea packages, they had resort checkin, but not now.

This is the way I remembered it as well... but for sure, you can't anymore. Only at the terminal

The only good thing we found about using Disney transfers from a resort is the luggage check-in. Other than your carry-on's, all luggage gets sent to the port directly from your resort. When we used the Disney transfers from AKL, the bus didn't pick us up at the resort until after NOON and STILL had to pick up at 2 other resorts. We never arrived at the port until well after 2:00 pm and by the time finally we checked in at the port, lunch was done, our room was ready and the safety drill was 1/2 an hour away.

That was our first and LAST time using resort transfers. I'd rather rent a car for the day and drive myself. Then again, I hate being held to other people's schedules.

True Dat!

Our last cruise, I rented a car. My iphone gps got us there with no worries. I dropped wife & kids at boat with luggage, then went back to car dropoff. They shuttle me back. Wife & kids had wait about 30 minutes for because you all have to check in together. We were on the boat by 11:30, and I honestly felt like on this cruise (our 3rd) we got an EXTRA day almost because we were on so early and got to do so much. I will always rent a car or splurge for a towncar... no more waiting on Disney transport just so I don't have to carry my bags in

The original official Land/Sea package did have resort check in for cruise as well as being able to use the same KTTW card for both your resort stay and cruise. That is no longer an option since they did away with the official land/sea package.

Also, as mentioned, it was very convenient when they let you check in for your cruise at MCO if you were taking DCL transfers from there but they did away with that after about 18 mos.

Thanks for the quick replies. That explains why I thought the process sounded familiar but I couldn't find anything on it currently.

Any info on inexpensive 1 way car rentals from AKV to PC? Cruising and staying at AKV mid October.

I think Alamo and National are onsite at WDW at the Car Care Center (near TTC). I've heard there is also car rental at the Swan/Dolphin and Shades of Green - not sure which agency. An onsite pick-up at WDW would be easiest as they'll send a shuttle to your resort to pick you up, otherwise you'd have to get to the rental agency - but nearly all agencies have a location near the port. In my experience with rentals, discounts and specials tend to come out about 6-8 weeks ahead so watch for deals later this summer for the fall.

Enjoy your land/sea vacation!

Here is a LINK for great info on rental cars at WDW.

I rented from Alamo at TTC which made it very convenient to pick up and the dropoff lot was very close to the DCL dock. I think rather than looking for the best deal, you need to look for most convenient way to get there that saves you money over Disney transportation.

Our latest Fantasy, we actually didn't check in together. The dads returned the rental car after running an errand and dropping us off and the moms and kids went ahead and checked in and boarded without them without any problem. Maybe because we were already in the system with pictures from a previous cruise? All he had to do was stop at the same check in "window" to get his card. By the time he joined us, we had suits on and had lunch ready by the pool.

Here is a list from the Port Canaveral website listing the area rental car agencies. ALL of these agencies also serve the Orlando International Airport. ALL of the following agencies have shuttles back and forth to the cruise terminals, so that is a non-issue when checking rental prices.:

AVIS
Cape Canaveral Avis Car Rental: 321-783-3643

National / Alamo may or may not offer 1 way rentals. It doesn't really matter since their rates have become insanely expensive in recent years. Thrifty and Payless Car Rentals do not offer 1 way rentals out of Cape Canaveral.
