Is living in a Retirement Community expensive?

I don't have much family, just an adult daughter and not sure where she will end up living. I plan on retiring in about five years at the age of 61.

Was going to look into retirement communities in Florida but not sure how much it would cost and if I could afford it.

Any one with any knowledge about it out there?

thanks!!

My Aunt & Uncle have a winter home in a gated retirement community outside of St Augustine. They paid less than $90,000 for their home, but I know they pay close to $700 a month in maintenance fees. They love it, lots of activities going on, and have made a ton of friends in the community.

Isn't 56 a bit early to be worried about that? Maybe in 25 years or more!
Life is for living, not stalking your daughter so as to have someone nearby in your old age.
A parent living in Florida would be a great reason for any daughter to visit more often together with any future significant other and any future grandchildren.

I live in Solivita, which is a gated 55+ community. All the houses are single family concrete construction (except for a few duplexes which have separate entrances on each side of a corner).

In addition to my mortgage, I pay about $320 per month. But since it is gated this includes security, road maintenance, all landscape maintenance including front, back and side yards and irrigation. Also 70 channels of basic cable, a downtown with health club, bank, library, restaurants, etc. Multiple swimming pools. etc.

There are two optional golf courses on the property.

There is a hospital under construction directly across the street from the main gate (opening later this year). And, the Disney Cast Members Club in the development has about 80 members.

Check out www.solivita.com for more information.

I can't wait until I am over 55 so I can live in a retirement community. Sounds like perfect to me- peace when you need it and fun when you want.
