fireflies here!
As a kid, I used to catch them in a jar at night. In the morning I would be horrified at the way they looked.

Did you forget to put little holes in the lid? For I am assuming that they moved on to the spirit world.

We don't have them in FL (I don't think) but when we'd go visit family in WV they were lightning bugs.

I've always called them fireflies. Love to sit out our rocking chairs on the front porch and watch them light up the sky. Reminds me of one of my favorite Texas songs:
Well I love the sound of a rain on a tin roof
on a hot summer night
love to hear those hound dogs a-barkin
Howlin at the full moon light
Love to see those fireflies a buzzin
Lighting up the southern sky
Yeah I'm a hell bent 100% Texan til I die

lightning bugs! My 4 yr old niece, however, calls them flashing bugs.
In loving memory of my grandmother, Ruth Bird, who passed away 12-29-06.

I'd wear a pair. I might even be able to get Mrs. Tex to wear some

We love watching the lightning bugs coming out in our yard. They're pretty thick right now, in fact. They're almost like magic, aren't they?

We were in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania a few years ago. Our hotel looked out onto a corn field. The corn was tall and thick with lightening bugs. It was an awesome sight at night.

I lived in VA until I was almost 9 and called them lightening bugs.

I live in WA state now and everyone calls them fireflies (if they even know what they are...we don't have them here).

I remember so many nights going out to chase them, catch them, etc. One of our neighbors (an adult) used to squish them and paint his face with the glow stuff! Eww!
