We did it without our last trip (and somehow managed decent viewing area, but we got wet). Also watched from the viewing balcony at the GCH. This time, we are doing the carthay package... don't feel like dealing with the lines and crushing surge of people as we will be 5 heads this time, with a new-ish born.

We did the WOC dining at Carthay Circle last Wednsday. The meal was fabulous, and we didn't have to line up really for the show. We arrived 15 minutes before showtime and found a great spot. There was plenty of room in the viewing area too. I could see the free FP areas were crowded with people.

SuperThread author here and glad you found it. In a nutshell, dining reservations not necessary at all.

sorry.....what is the viewing balcony at GCH? We are staying at the Villas, first time to Disneyland. Thank you!

ok, just searched and found that there is only a partial view of WOC, so if this is our ONE trip, guess we should go see it front and center with the dining reservations? We'll be there July 4th weekend

I think the difference in front and center without the dining package and front and center with the dining package is the amount of time waiting in line. With WoC FP from CC people say 15-20 min before show, without (and especially on a busy weekend like that) you may need to be there 1-2 hours before the show.

Hope you have a fantastic trip!

Here is the view you can expect, which I took at the time.

I've also watched WOC from behind. Between Mickey's fun wheel, and the first support structure for the Calf screamin' first rise, there is this little sliver of boardwalk behind the support foundation, which you can watch from. Its not as good as from the other side of the lagoon, but it was a no-waiting spot we found.... AND you can sit down on a blanket vs. standing like sardines.

FWIW, I have done the dining package four times and have not found this to be true. In my experience you may save yourself 30 minutes of waiting (60 minutes vs. 90). But that is still not enough reason IMO to get a dining package.

With your position on this, why did you go back 3 more times?

For the OP, you should also ask yourself what you will do for dinner plans if you don't get the WOC dining package. If you are going to eat at a similar restaurant, then just pay the little extra for the package.

IMHO I believe the WoC dining packages are worth it.. last time we were there I just got flustered to think that I had to line up an hour and a half before park open practically to GET IN LINE to get a fast pass.. and that didn't even include the 90 min wait prior to the show in order to "hopefully" get a good position. i want to be able to enjoy the park and not have to wait in lines all day long if I can help it.. while people were waiting in that fast pass line i was probably able to ride 3-4 rides with little or no lines ..
This time I was determined to make mine and my children's lives a lot easier and just not deal with the heinous crowds especially since it'll be June when the parks are more likely to be busier.. If I have a spend a little extra on a meal I would have had to eat anyways to keep my energy up in following my boys and I can get a pretty good viewing of a show that's supposed to "WOW".. then I'm all for it
I think it all depends on how you look at it I guess. If you don't mind waiting in line.. then by all means, the free Fastpass distribution in the morning is fine.

Because we had to eat somewhere and wanted to eat at the restaurant.

Some folks may not feel like spending $30-50 per person to dine at DCA. They should not think they have to in order to see WOC.

I do not understand this. With the WOC dining you still need to wait in line. Especially if you want a rail spot where kids can see without obstruction.
