We did the trolley tour, shopped for some conch shells, and ate some rather delicious key lime pie

I didn't think you were allowed to buy or sell conch shells because the animal is so rare. Was I confused?

I don't know...but if they are rare, why do they let you eat conch in the Bahamas? So yummy!

We saw barrels of them, itty bitty to real large. Not sure how they were selling them. I thought they were real.

Found the answer as it applies in Florida:

By law under Florida Regulation #68B-16.003, paragraph (5). "It is not unlawful for any person to take or possess queen conch shells from the land or waters of the State of Florida, so long as such shells do not contain any living queen conch at the time of taking, and so long as a living queen conch is not killed, mutilated, or removed from its shell prior to taking such shell; provided further, that possession by any person, while in or on the waters of the State of Florida, of conch meat or of any queen conch shell having an off-centered hole larger than 1/16 inch in diameter through its spire shall constitute a violation of this chapter."

The Bahamas would be a totally different matter since they're not part of the US I suppose. They's have their own regulations - and given the way other countries treat things like shark, clearly the rarity of something in the waters isn't something most people are concerned with.

We rented one of the electric cars, more of a glorified golf cart but it was fun. There are a few companies that rent there and they pick you up near the ship. Key West is small so it's hard to get lost and maps are readily available.

Another vote for the trolley tours and get your tickets online.
