Lifeguard Hours

My daughter's friend is going down for Fall Advantage as a Lifeguard.

He is assuming he will be working at a resort pool or one of the water parks.

For those who have been a lifeguard, are you free most nights? Do you have the opportunity to get trained in something else so you can get more hours?

Would you be able to get a night job nearby? Like as a waiter or a bouncer?

Reason he wants to know is because he has college loans kicking in during his time as CP and doesn't think he can make enough money.

Any ideas?

Michele

If you are a resort lifeguard (most are), your shift can go as late at 10:30-11:30.

If you're in water parks, as late as 7-8 depending on the day.

Once you get trained in recreation, you can always ask to be cross-trained, however, that is always up to operational needs and will usually be a "no." But, you can pick up extra recreation shifts on the HUB.

As for getting a night job, it is discouraged, but doable. I was a Vacation Planner during my CP, I was always done by 7 and was able to get a night job in club security nearby because there would never be a conflict.

My advice, wait a couple weeks, learn what your schedule will be like, and see what opportunities there are for additional hours before you search elsewhere.

thanks.

Are resort pools open late primarily during the summer and holidays? Are they lifeguarded after darK?

Trying to get a handle on whether resort pool lifeguards are done by dark starting in October.

Thanks, Michele

Resorts pools "close" at 10pm every night throughout the year. After that, guests swim at their own risk. In my experience, they rarely stay "open" until 11pm. Pools are not guarded after that, swim at your own risk. This is done because resort "quiet hours" begin at 10pm.

During spring/summer hours resort lifeguards work 8 hour shifts, either AM till 5:00pm or PM till 10:30pm, depending on the resort as well. and winter hours are 10 hour days, done at 8:15pm. (I'm not a waterpark guard but the waterparks close by 5 or 6pm every night, so they always have their evenings pretty free)

If he's a resort lifeguard, he'll have a pretty good shot at getting hours. I typically had 40 hours every week, except towards the end when I only got 30, but I would've been able to pick up shifts pretty easily. During the spring/summer hours he'll also be able to work double shifts. I was deployed during my program, so I was trained to work at different resorts, which gave me more opportunity to pick up more shifts

I always thought I'd pick up part time job on the side, but never did since I was working 10 hour lines and it just seemed like too much of a hassle. You definitely can, but it has to be a very flexible job, since as a cp you have practically no control over your schedule
