Question Upgrade, Do we have a shot?

We are setting sail in a few weeks, May 9th! and already are in a concierge family suite, but would love to try an upgrade at the port to 1-bedroom.

The problem lies in the fact we are traveling with my in-laws, who do not like to check out of their hotel room until they absoultely have to -- like until the maid is knocking down the door point...so there is no way we will make it to the port super early.

What do you guys think the are the chances of us scoring an upgrade, if we don't get to port until 11:30 / 12ish? I think we will try no matter what, but I would just love hear your thoughts.

Thank you all!
Kris

Can you travel separately to the port from them?

Remind them that if they stay in their hotel room until the bitter end, they are missing out on what is likely a FAR more expensive "hotel" experience, and are missing out on those first few hours on the ship.

Check out and leave for port without them. Seriously, if you're already paying for concierge, boarding group 1 is a huge perk. Don't waste it.

Are there any available.

I would first check to see if there are any 1 bedroom's available still. Call Disney or travel agent 1 week prior to cruise. If no 1 bedrooms and you don't care about boarding ship first then hang with the family at the hotel.

If there are then leave your in-laws for sure. All the 1 bedroom suites will go quick.

Depends on season and length of cruise.
I'll guess $300-1000.

It is not a set price, just take the amount it costs to upgrade about a month out from the cruise and then it is around 50% of that. Could be a little more could be a little less, it varies from sailing to sailing.

I don't think the 50% off is a rate that can really be used as a guideline.

I've upgraded at the port a couple of times from the same cat. to the same cat. and paid the exact same price for the same length cruise and they were at different times of the year.
This past Sept. we upgraded from a Cat. 7A to the 2 bedroom and the price difference beforehand was around $6000 and the upgrade cost was no where near 50% the difference. Had I based the difference on our initial booking it was a much bigger difference.

Well it can vary quite a bit. We have not had much luck with upgrades even though we go to the desk just to find out each cruise. DH usually asks out of curiosity about the pricing. This is why we generally just book the exact room we want. We always hope though. The prices we have gotten seem to vary but usually cruise at different times of the year.

This is KEY! LOL!

On my last cruise one person was DETERMINED that she would get an upgrade. Her TA told her "there's no where to upgrade to" She decided the TA was clueless. If you tried to book on line there was nothing left. Her response "Disney holds cabins for upgrades they don't sell them all"

So she drags her family to the port.. and... the sign was up from the very first moment. No upgrades. So they got to sit around in there for a few hours while she pouted.

And of course she wound up not being happy most of the trip. She really didn't like the cabin she booked but she had "read" on boards like this about upgrades and believed they were common.

Actually you need to check the cat you want and above. Even if all the cabins you want are gone, if one in an above cat is available at port someone in your desired cat could be moved there, then a cabin in your desired cat becomes available. And then it can cascades down thru all the categories.

I don't mean to take over this thread, but we on a B2B on the Dream in June. We have an inside room for the first cruise and a verandah for the 2nd. Any idea on the possibility of upgrading, so we wouldn't have to switch rooms? Anyone had an automatic upgrade in that situation? We probably could have had the same ocean view room the whole time, for the same price, decided we wanted to try the verandah. Also, off topic, we are celebrating our 10 year anniversary should this be noted in our reservation? If so, can we do it or does the TA have to? Thanks.

We did a B2B in the same category for each leg of the journey, but still had to move -- the same room wasn't available for the second voyage. We were in the same category (next door, in fact), but that was as close as they could get us. So we packed up and our room steward moved us while we were off the ship waiting to be re-admitted.

For a 5 day cruise it was $2125 to go from a Cat. 7A to a Cat. S on the Magic. If it had just been my family I wouldn't have done it but my cousin and his wife were sailing with us (first time on DCL) and and it was my birthday so I figured the splurge was worth the cost.
