I thought he has always charged $14 except for when he had a sale.

I paid $13 when I rented from him awhile ago. Maybe it was a sale. I was just asking because I used the cost of renting vs. owning when making my decision whether or not to buy.

Maybe but I think the question was simply buying in for a smaller contract as the only ownership. Owning multiple smaller contracts at different home resorts can work well, the issue is getting there. About the only way to do so for 50 points or less is to go retail or overpay resale. IMO the cost to get there is usually not worth it for the insurance and future options it avails. About the only time it makes sense is for the new resorts that you aren't going to be able to buy resale for any savings regardless like GF or if you can find a private seller or someone that owns multiple smaller contracts you can buy at one time. Once you get over around 50 points, the reasonableness tends to increase. Another situation it may work is if the bulk of one's points are lower priced but you want some points for an occasional high cost options like BLT or GF.

Since the OP of this thread has decided to purchase a DVC contract (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3099019) this one has strayed from the original topic and is now drifting on the currents.

Rather than have a large thread with so many components, it would be best if those with purchase questions would ask them by starting a new thread.
