A little disappointed in future cruise booking but on points - not much of a discount

We just got off The Fantasy and had a marvelous time. So much so, we even did a dummy future cruise booking.

When paying in cash, you get a discount of 10% plus up to a $200 onboard credit.

We cruised on DVC points this last time, and when we did the future booking we were told the points discount would also be "up to 10%". Key words apparently are "up to....".

In looking at an Alaska cruise for next year, the cat 9C oceanview regular points per adult is 245, they are only discounting it to 238, kids get no discount at all.

Cat 5C verandah is regular 377 points and that one only goes down to 370. It's really quite a bummer.

We know it's not always the best use of points, but our dd really is not interested in WDW any more and loves to cruise. As much as I don't want the hassel, it may just be better to try and rent our points for a couple of years, pay cash for the cruise, get a better discount and the on board credit as well.

Just feel a little misled by the future cruise booking desk on what my DVC discount would be.

This is EXACTLY why we haven't signed up for dvc yet...we prefer cruising to staying on property @ wdw and so it's not a good savings for our purposes. Such a bummer.

I have found it always cheaper to book a cruise paying cash instead of using points.

I concur. I use my DVC points for visiting WDW, DLR and Disney resorts.

On our cruise in February we used points 408 total. We rented our points once before through a reputable company and received 10 dollars a point. If we had done the same thing and used the cash for the cruise we could have paid for our cabin category 5D paid for airfare and had a couple hundred dollars left for spending. I know a lot of people aren't crazy about renting points but I will think twice about using them for cruising.

I agree. We have rented points several times and used the cash for our cruises. Takes a lot less points when you do it that way, still get DVC benefits on board.
