What to do in St Thomas?

We cruise in November and have Bernards booked for St Maarten. Can not decide what to do in St Thomas/St John. Have searched all over the boards and read all kids of port adventures and still can't decide. We have 3 kids who will be 9, 7, and 5 at the time. The idea of sitting on a beach all day does not appeal as we would love to see the island. Any suggestions?

We did the full day snorkle/sail Bucks Island with the sea turtles, then to honeymoon beach. We all loved it. My girls were 10 and just turned 13. The pirate ship type boats were a hit, dd got to help raise the sail. Kenny Chesney music and rum punch, and honeymoon beach/water were unbelievable. We are going to do it again when we sail in Feb 2014.

We've done the gondola up the mountain, which was cool if only for the views of the harbor and the island. We've done the butterfly farm - which is excellent, well worth the money, and walking distance from the port! We've wandered around Charlotte-Amalie and Havensight, which are both pretty neat. We've gone to Coral World and did a semi-sub tour and then spent some time with the animals.

There's a ton to do on St. Thomas without getting anywhere near a beach! I'd recommend any of the things we've done (Coral World was pretty neat - that was a DCL tour - and the Butterfly Farm tickets through DCL were less than at the door when we did that).

The only thing I wouldn't recommend is getting ice cream at Ben & Jerry's in the yacht/harbor club area! We ordered 3 milkshakes, and it took the one girl working there 30+ minutes to make them! And she had no problem watching other patrons walk out the door because it was taking her so long! Island time indeed!

We sail in a little over 3 weeks and for our St. Thomas day, we're going over to Trunk Bay on St. John on our own for a couple of hours. Everyone says it's a beautiful beach, plus we are looking forward to the boat ride over and back. After we come back to St. Thomas, we're doing the aerial tram and shopping (if time allows).

My kids are similar in ages. We did the Doubloon excursion two weeks ago, half day. LOVED IT!!
We considered the full day (same company), but decided we didn't want to be tied up all day.

So we did the Doubloon in the morning, the snorkeling was great for kids, calm enough water, they saw lots of sealife, turtles, stingrays, etc. We stopped for a good amount of time for the kids to really get into it. Staff was a blast. Drinks and chips on the way back.

After that we went up to Paradise Point on the gondola and took some great pics of the harbor/ship/island, etc. It was a beautiful view.

Then did a little shopping right there at the shops by the ship.

It was a perfect day! Would like to explore more of St Thomas, but that was a great intro, and never had to go too far from the ship.

In the past we went to Paradise Point. Two weeks ago DH and I left the kids on the ship and did the St. Johns tour. While we enjoyed it a lot, we did talk about how we were glad we didn't take the kids on that when they were younger. We were on the ferry for nearly an hour and they don't want you up walking around, at least on the top deck -- which is understandable -- but the small kids nearby were bored. You don't get much time on the beach with that either. We went with the groups who also did the beach excursions and they returned to the ship with us at noon. The tour was maybe 1 1/2 hours so that was all the time they had away from our group for the beach.
