If you don't have trip insurance, besides the cost of ambulatory services and medical costs, do you have to pay anything to the cruise line for transporting you back to shore?

It is part of your medical fees that are paid by your health insurance for transport.

What many people do not realize is there are medical emergencies of some sort on every sailing, and every ship has a morgue as well. I know at Port Everglades in particular the Sheriff's office is on guard ready with the county coroner every time the ships come in because the first items off the ship are the deceased.
Think of it, the number of people sailing on each ship, and the number of people that pass daily in general, many will go on a cruise when they know they are on their way out, just so they have their final hurrah's the way they want it.
Not something pleasant anyone wants to think about.

I know when my friends mom/dad went on an Alaska cruise about 8 years ago they did not buy trip insurance although I told them they really really should... well after leaving Seattle he had issues, had to be helicoptered back to Seattle and before the helicopter would leave the ground to come get him they authorized a $25k charge on his American Express card... he spent 2 months in the hospital in Seattle before he was allowed to travel home to South Florida. He passed away 2 years later, but in the mean time financially it was hell... he and his wife of 40 years legally divorced, she got the house, car, business, and he filed medical bankruptcy... not the best way to deal with the situation, however they did what they had to do at the moment, of course had they purchased the trip insurance, it would have been covered. The 3 cruises they took after recovery and before his death they DID purchase the insurance.

It depends on your health insurance. Some companies will pay for the flight to an appropriate hospital.

We were on the 6/23/12 cruise, too. I know we heard them call for the emergency team twice. one of them was a young boy who collapsed by one of the sliding doors...we came upon it as they were calling for assistance.

How could they afford to take 3 more cruises in the next 2 years if they had to file bankruptcy? And they cruised before or after they got a divorce? Some people have different priorities I guess.

We didn't either until the Captain announced it. Guess we were sleeping soundly!

We've seen people being taken off of the ship while in port many times. One cruise, we had to stop one evening in San Juan, Puerto Rico to drop off a man and his family due to medical reasons. Rumor had it he had stroke symptoms, but people were on deck watching the docking, even CMs! They were taking pictures! Guess they don't see San Juan much The guest being taken off waved at everyone as he was being taken off, so he was in good spirits.

That being said, cruises have medical personnel for a reason... Get that many ppl together at once, someone will have a medical emergency. I am a nurse at a hospital, and bad things can happen out of nowhere and for no reason.. A cruise doesn't prevent that.

And a lot of insurance does not pay for this type of transport if it is outside the US

This is a prime example of why you need to know what your insurance will pay.

This also brings back up the "do I need a passport debate"

Yes, they do amazing things now. DW's nephew's daughter is doing great at age one. She wasn't much more than 23 or 24 weeks along when she was born. They have the $6 million hospital bill framed over her crib.
I think *I* would need to be hospitalized after getting a $6 million dollar hospital bill! I'm so glad to hear that their daughter is doing great.

I would think that those medical bills got so sky high that they would never even be able to put a dent into the balance by even making monthly payments, so they probably seeked legal councel and were told to file a medical bankruptcy. And it sounds like their divorce was on paper only so that the husband could file bankruptcy without the wife suffering the consequences of losing everything. I don't blame them...wasn't it bad enough they were faced with such horrible medical issues? Two months in the hospital?!?! That's a long time!! And, if all they filed bankruptcy on was the medical, and their lifestyle supported vacation expenses prior to that, then their lifestyle would have most likely supported vacation expenses afterwards. After such a health scare, their priorities were probably to live life to it's fullest while they still had time together with his poor health. I am pretty sure that's what DH and I would do!

I hope that both families that suffered the medical emergencies last night are doing better today. Hopefully they will both be able to go on the cruise sometime in the future. I think I'm going to buy the travel insurance next time I go on a cruise. Reading this thread has scared me a little!! LOL
