Texting plans while onboard

We have AT&T. Anyone know if we can add a international text plan? Last year we tried but got billed per text when we had signed up for the 50 international text pkg. I have a feeling that since we are at sea that pkg did not apply.

Your plan and carrier do not matter when you are at sea. The only service available is Cellular at Sea, and you will always pay their rates.

Voice 2.50 per minute, incoming text, pictures and video at standard rate, send text $.50, send picture or video $1.30, data .0195 per kb

If you have an iPhone and use iMessage for your texting, then you can use wifi minutes and won't have to pay anything for cellular service. Much cheaper, and you don't risk unexpected data charges if you go out of airplane mode.

If you have another brand smartphone, well, as they say, never mind.

I have iPhone. Guess wifi is cheapest. Thanks!

I too had the same thing happen with AT&T. Signed up for int'l texting plan but got charged as you did. One stop at my local store and it was immediately credited. Still keep the plan when I go away for when we are in the different ports of call and don't believe I've had any problems since.

I called AT&T directly and ordered the texting package it worked fine. You can start it day of cruise and then give them the ending date. They recommended keeping the plan for about 5 days after our return as there is sometimes a delay in posting the texts.

If you are only wanting to text between family members/friends that are onboard the ship, the DCL provided wave phones will text. The wave phones can't text to non wave phones. This service is free.

Otherwise use one of the ideas/services that PPs have mentioned. The wifi onboard is very slow, think dial up speeds.
