Restroom seems the appropriate word to use in public settings

The bathroom if I'm at home, the ladies room or restroom if I'm in public.

In high school it was always "the lav", though my kids looked at me like I was crazy when I told them that. They call it the bathroom at school, too.

In colonial times, an outhouse was referred to as "The Necessary House". My grandmother always referred to public restrooms as "comfort stations", but then she was born during the reign of Queen Victoria.

In someone's home, it's the bathroom.

In public, it's the restroom.

At work, it's the ladies room (we're all women).

Tinkletown!

(I was showing some people around Disneyland and the wife asked me where was Tinkletown when we were on the way to Toon Town.)

I tend to call it the ladies' room.

Here we call it the toilet. Even in the shopping centre or out and about, the sign reads toilet.
Not a restroom here, I'm not resting while I'm in there. And not a bathroom. Our toilet is not in the bathroom. The bathroom houses our bath, shower etc. The toilet has a room of its own. A potty here is a little plastic bowl that a toddler will use before using the big toilet.

I had a teacher who called the restroom "the basement." Very confusing for first graders. I still wonder where that one came from,we are in Louisiana where there are VERY few basements,

I see amg35 already mentioned "washroom." That's the usual term up here in Nova Scotia and I think Canada in general for public toilets.

When I first moved here from the U.S. east coast, I noticed a sign in the mall that said "washroom." I thought, "Wow, maybe they have showers? How cool to have a special room just to wash up in." Then I went looking for the toilets and found, alas, that "washroom" like "rest room" was actually just a euphemism for the place where the toilets are!

At home it can be many things - the potty, the bathroom, and (to my ex-USMC hubby) the can or the head.

When we are out, it is either the bathroom (my kids) or the restroom (DH and I).
