Florida IDP

Not sure if anyone is still following this, but the bill to repeal the law requiring that we carry an IDP has made it to the Governors desk as of yesterday. Once signed, the bill will be law and repeal the requirement retroactive to January 1.

Had a friend return after March Break and he was never asked for one. I work with a lawyer who got one for his upcoming April trip. I've been following to see if its "official" before our trip in mid-April. I don't want to shell out the money if I don't have to - but will get one just to be safe if the law hasn't been officially repealed.

My understanding is that there is a grace period now until they figure things out. So Canadians at least are safe.

They're reporting that the Governor wants to expedite the process and will sign it "as soon as it hits [his] desk". I'm hoping its before Apr 14!

I remember when the news broke a few weeks ago, we were in an uproar abt it. Within a day they announced that it would not be enforced for a while until they made some decisions. So we were fine for our mid March trip.

It's not a matter of enforcement by the police, it's the fact that if you're in an accident your insurance company, or the one of the person you're in an accident with, can essentially deny coverage based on the fact that you haven't complied with the legal license requirements of the state. This is the reason the lawyer in my office has his for their trip next week.

In case anyone is still wondering, this was signed by the Governors representative earlier this week. It has been officially repealed, and Canadians are free to drive in FL without an IDP! Yay!
