D23 Expo Questions

Hi everyone. I have a few questions for those of you who have been before.
1. One day tickets are for any of the three days, correct? (We plan to only go the first day if possible) I know some conventions the first day is only available to package ticket purchasers.
2. How would this compare to something like Comic Con in San Diego? (How it's set up, how things are run, what types of events/merchandise/etc will be there)
3. What tips would you give to someone who will be attending for the first time and only for one day?

1. A one-day ticket is good for any day.

2. The first year, it was great. Not very crowded, got to see everything we wanted, lines weren't bad. Last time was the exact opposite. Lines were horrid and closed a few hours before most panels. Just the line to get in took an hour and we already had passes and were in the member line. Completely unorganized. They have tried to reassure that this year will be better. We'll see. I think the main problem last year with the panels was that the rooms were really way too small. We did get into the marquee presentations that were in the arena, but had to make sure we were in line at least an hour before. Things not in the main arena were really hit and miss. I think we waited 2 hours for the Brave panel but got in no problem. There was another one we tried to get in (cant' remember what) but the line was closed 3 hours before it started.
Overall, it's fairly similar to Comic-Con but on a much smaller scale. The floor is divided into different parts: D23 Dream Store where you can buy all the official licensed merchandise for the event, The Disney Store had an area, Disney Imagineering had an area with displays of new attractions coming and also a store which there was always a line to get into. There was a small section of the floor for outside venders/exhibits (travel companies, collectors selling rare goodies, authors, etc). There are characters out here and there, service projects to work on, new games you can play. Very similar to Comic-Con.

3. Just like Comic-Con, look at the schedule when it comes out and know what you want to see before you go. If you go to see anything in the arena, count on them taking your camera, cell phone, or any other recording device you might have. They won't do it for everything but they will if you go to the films or games presentation because they will be showing things that aren't released yet and they don't trust you.

My #1 tip!!! If the Disney Legends presentation is the day you are going, GO! It really was awesome, even my husband thought it was special and he was just along for the ride to this one. We saw Jodi Benson(sang), Anika Noni Rose(sang), Lea Salonga(sang), Paige O'Hara, Regis Philbin, Tom Bergeron, Jim Henson's family, and the best ever Disney Moment: Kermit and Rowlf singing the entire Rainbow Connection from a log in a swamp in the middle of the stage. The whole thing was amazing and I cried. Thankfully the did let you take your cameras into this and I have a ton of great videos.

I agree. But I wonder how they ccan make this year's Legends match up to the one last time? It was just so awesome.

Yeah, it was. I didn't go the first year so I don't have anything to compare. Do they leak who the new legends are before the ceremony? I agree it will be very hard to top or even equal the last one.

In 2011 all the Legends were announced ahead of time.

When I talked to Steven Clark a couple months ago, he seemed very excited about the list of Legends that was being put together.

Thanks everyone for your input and tips!! I don't know if I missed it on the site or what, but anyone know what time the expo opens each day (both both nonmembers and members)? I know it's a ways away but I'm a planner. Haha

The Legends for 2009 were awesome too! The roster was: Tony Anselmo, Harry Archinal, Bea Arthur, Bill Farmer, Estelle Getty, Don Iwerks, Rue McClanahan, Leota Toombs Thomas, Betty White and Robin Williams..great presentation!

The schedule I dug out has events starting at 9am, but only open to D23 Members. I think the first hour was limited to members-only with everything opening to non-members at 10am?

Most of the "big" presentations started at 10:30am/11am, which left little time for lining up, part of the complaints.

I think for the Studios presentation on Saturday, we got to the Convention Center at 7:30am and stood outside...then randomly wandered into the correct line inside (it was a free-for-all once we entered and got lucky), which turned into the stand-by "if you are really, really lucky" line. We did get in, barely.

As of right now, I am not a member but the person I will be with is a member. For this "members only" time would I be allowed in since I'm with a member?
I plan to buy my own membership eventually, just haven't yet.

I am the member, my guest was not. In 2011, both of our credentials listed "member" on them - she was able to enter with me, no problem.

So the answer was a yes, but we haven't gotten any documentation for 2013....? Maybe?

Thanks. I guess we'll just have to wait and see! I hope I'll be able to get in early with her.

I skipped the Legends presentation, I am not sure why, it must have been to attend another panel. I was interested in the park related ones, and Pixar. Over the 3 days, I saw the DL Hotel one, Parks, and others about building the new Star Tours ride and the Little Mermaid ride. LOTS of funny inside humor. Also one about CarsLand development (this was well before it opened), that one had John Lassiter in it. I also saw one about Monsters University. I know I saw John Lassiter at 2 different panels.

YES, I waited in long lines, but it was worth it to see the ones I wanted to see. I had to miss some others I WANTED to see, like Studios (missed those Avengers, Robert Downey Jr!) and Marvel, Buena Vista St project, and Voices of the parks, Brave animation, and Dick Van Dyle, and of course, the Legends presentation..... So hard to choose sometimes.

By just going on Friday will we still get to see some cool and interesting panels? I know some conventions/expos all the exciting stuff is on Saturday. If I could go multiple days, I would. I just can't because of scheduling issues.

Last time Legends was on Day 1, if memory serves.
