Kids under 3 eat free?

Hi Everyone!

I am planning a trip for this January and will be bringing my daughter who will be turning 3 two weeks after our visit. My husband has to go away for work, so I thought that it might be fun to bring her for a few days! She has never been.

I know it says kids under 3 eat free, but how does this work? Does the server need to ask me her age and should I bring her birth certificate? We plan on doing mostly character meals, so does she just eat off my plate for the buffets? I just want to be prepared, I almost feel like I want to say she is over 3 because it will be so close to her birthday and I don't want anyone to think we are lying about her age.

Thanks!

On your reservation just put her down as an infant. No birth certificate needed at the restaurant. They will take your word for it!

They won't ask.

At all character buffets, she can have her own plate of whatever you want to get for her to eat. She doesn't have to eat from your plate.

At non-buffet places, she would not get her own servings, but they would give you a small plate to share your meal with her. (This does vary, as we had a few places bring my then-2-yr-old nephew his own stuff like mac and cheese or mashed potatoes without charging for it; some places we actually ordered him something along those lines and did pay $3 or so for it).

At CS nobody will see or care what y'all share.

To clarify, they can eat free at buffets and family style dining. If you order meals at other places, you pay for the meal.

Go for the buffets/family style meals as much as you can while she's still free!! This is when it's the best value to take advantage of the buffets/family style meals!

I specifically planned my son's 1st trip the week he turned 3. He turned 3 ON the trip...since he was 2 when we checked in the resort, he counted as 2 all week (for dining, tickets, and room occupancy) Granted he is/was small, but no one gave us any trouble about his age. He ate for free with his own plate at all buffets and family style (Boma, Ohana, Crystal Palace, Tusker House, Chef Mickey, Hollywood & Vine). We just shared CS and snacks (and at Sci Fi and T Rex).

I am planning our next trip before my twins turn 3

Anything you order for her, you will pay for.

Go for it and enjoy it. My son was 2.5 on our last trip. We had

Chef Mickey's
Ohana
Crystal Palace
Tusker House
Akershus
Garden Grill

He ate to his heart's content off his own plate.

At CRT, they gave him fruit, butter noodles and ice cream for dessert. He also ate from the bread they brought at the beginning.

I shared my meal with him at QS places. We just went places that served larger portions.

I tell people if they think their toddler will enjoy Disney to go ahead and take them. You can't beat the price.

Thank you for posting this! We are going around the same time next year when DS is almost 3 also and I had no idea about this!! I decided last night to probably do DDP as I did a "faux" dinner at a normal resturant and saw we'd probably pay around $87 for 4 of us and that wasn't even a nice resturant!! If we are on vacation I'd like to eat one nice meal a day so DDP would probably be good for us to do the character meals and steakhouse type places...I was struggling with this because DS wouldn't qualify because of his age...now I know that at least sometimes I don't have to worry about it!! Thanks!!!

Yup kids under 3 are free so long as you aren't ordering something specifically for them. One thing though, if you are on the dining plan I would watch your receipts like a hawk, when we went last year we would order our stuff (at sit down non-buffet, non-family style) places and ask the server at the time we were ordering to pay cash seperately for something off the kids menu for our kids, and some servers would forget and "debit" our meal credits for those menu items! (It was usually resolved in-restaurant, but 2 places it was not and required a trip to guest services. Hoop de doo didn't give us an itemized receipt for menu credits and they charged us for the kids, and at Jiko our server had no idea how to fix it and kept debiting credits!) We'd be in for a rude awakening if we weren't paying attention come the last 2-3 days of our trip!

Anyone know what they do for breakfast?

Depending on what it is I may switch plates between my 3.5 year old and my 18 month old. Right now the 18 month old is eating better than her older sister.

I think for counter services I may end up buying an adult meal and splitting it between the 2 girls.
