UK car seat in the US

We fly out in 12 days!!! I was planning on taking a car seat with us for baby DS but I'm now worried incase it gets damaged in hold. I didn't want to hire one as for one it seems quite expensive and two I've heard horror stories about the state of the seat you get. What would you do?

In 2011 relatives took their old one with them and left it in the rental car on return. No problem with VA transporting it.
Last year we arrived before them so went to Walmart and bought a highback booster, they then brought it home with Delta, again no damage.

I wouldn't rent for cost & no idea what has happened to them.

They bought a bag from Kiddiecare for about £5-6 but don't see them on their site now. Something like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sunshine-Kid...3552469&sr=8-1

Or this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Travel-Carse...3552469&sr=8-2

We have taken seats for DD every time and never had any problems with them being damaged.

We have taken everything from her infant carrier to her big 0+/1 seat and now a high back booster.

We have a bag from Kiddicare that has rucksack type straps making it easier to carry.

Thanks for the reassurance. I think I'll just take one out with us. I've been looking for bags online and there doesn't seem to be any offers about. There is a kiddiecare opening by us the day before we go but I think I'd be cutting it a bit fine to get it from there. Also I don't want to take our current car seat just incase it did get damaged so I'll planning on buying a (cheapish) 2nd seat. Never mind saving for holiday spends I'll need a 2nd mortgage for all the "extras" I think I need

That's a good move and something I started doing when DD was 2. I used to fly a lot with her when she was little so I guess it ups the odds of damage but I did have one damaged and a car seat is something you don't want to risk using if there is any doubt as to its safety. When I flew with KLM they actually put it on the plane. VA always stuck it in the hold though and aside from the once, there was never a problem.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm looking at getting a Britax First Class Plus, does anyone have experience of these fitting in American cars? I'd hate to get it there and find it won't fit. The only problem is I don't know what car we will get until we get there but It'll be mid size ie American Ford Focus.

Right decision made going to get a Britax and take it with me and I've got a friend on the hunt for a travel bag. You've all been very informative thanks.

We have always taken our car seats and strollers, the first few times we took the Britax 123 seats which are pretty heavy and bulky, the airline gave us some big heavy duty clear plastic bags to put them in, then we took them to the overrides baggage area, we checked our strollers at the gate.

There has never been any damage to our seats and we haven't had a problem fitting them into the cars the other end, we now have two big holdalls which we pack the high back boosters in and pack our clothes act around them, then just I then go up to the parking garage and get them out while dh sorts the car hire at the desk. It's always fun! Lol

Think the ever wise Radley has decided to take her maxi cosi pebble rather than get a new one.

Again, has anyone had experience of a maxi cosi in an American car?
