Question Houston to Galveston Car Hire

Hi there,

Please can you help, I need to get from Houston George Bush airport in May 15 to Galveston Port for the EBTA on the 18 May. Whilst a one way car rental seems to be the obvious answer, I cant find one. I would like to spend a day at Johnson NASA Space Center also. Any help or tips would be gratefully appreciated as I am trying to achieve this on a budget as my wife has allowed me to go on vacation without her and I don't want to put a big dent in my budget as we have three other DCL cruises booked this year. One of which starts a few days after this one.

We rented from AVIS at IAH and did a one-way rental. The drop off location is in Texas City (about 10 min from the port). The Texas City location will drive you to the port for a fee of $40.

We've read that Enterprise allows a one-way rental from IAH to their location on Galveston Island - I believe Enterprise is the only rental agency with a presence on the Island.

Have u considered renting a car at IAH - returning it there..then just using a shared shuttle -- say super shuttle from airport to Port.

My Brother-in-law used Enterprise, since they are on the island. They came the day before and spent it with us. He was going to get a taxi from Enterprise to the port, but I took him instead. But Enterprise is an option, just getting to the port is another issue, since it's not that close.

Wink Enterprise-I Tried

Hi there,

Thanks for the info, Enterprise is what I wanted to do, although it only offers one rentals between airports, I tried doing online chat, that failed a number of times. I am going to put a post on about using the 102 bus and then the Greyhound. I found getting across Iraq easier to organise than an easier solution of getting from IAH to Galveston !!!

See my post from a couple of days ago:

Galveston Bush (IAH) Car Rental & Port Parking Experience

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just returned from the 6 night out of Galveston. We flew down from Jersey on Friday morning for a Saturday sailing. After looking at my transportation options, here's what I did.

I found a car rental on Dollar for $79/week. Rate code: RWXW5. After all the taxes, the bill was $162 and gas $18 = $180.00. The parking was $60 for the week ($55 if you prepay which is what I did). So my total transportion bill was $235.00.

The advantages are that I had a car on the day that I arrived with the freedom that that affords. Hotel options expand greatly so you can shop around and recover some of the $235 expense. We wound up staying at a Hampton INN ($99) in Clear Lake in the middle of all the malls. We also managed to make it to NASA the last hour that it was open. FYI: they won't charge you that late in the day for parking or admission. Just tell them you want to go to the gift shop. For my part, I filled up on shirts, posters and patches from said shop.

In the morning we had the car and were able to explore Galveston as well as hit a Kroger's to get some stuff. Then time to park. Super easy to drop the bags off at Terminal A, then pop over to the lot. We took the shuttle back to the terminal and were all set. You can walk from the lot to the terminal as it's probably about 200-300 yards.

Upon return, we did the express walk off so we were off the ship by 7:45, the shuttles were lined up and waiting. We were in our car, wheels rolling at 8:00 AM. With plenty of time to make our 12:12 PM flight back to EWR.

The Disney Shuttle is a pretty good deal at $30 each way. From what I hear, they are very reliable. However, once you get past 3 or 4 people in your party, and if you want the freedom and flexibility of a car, you might consider renting and parking.

So we are gone for over 2 weeks and never return to Galveston...

You can only rent Enterprice with drop off in Galveston when you call the Galveston office...
Be aware that people have reported about crazy amounts of drop off fees (told upfront that is was included but wasn't or never mentioned it and people dropped the car of and needed to pay drop off fees or people asked specifick about the fees and told there weren't and then needed ro pay them. Also people reported no drop of fees at all).

Another (maybe even cheaper) option is rent a car from a cheaper rental facillity (and use a code if you can find one) and return the car Saturday morning to the airport and use DCL transportation $30.

Wink Update-Enterprise

Hi there,

Just to give you an update, after along journey which is a bus through the highlands of Scotland then overnight at Edinburgh airport, I then board the plane to Heathrow a few hours of a lay over then head for Houston for the EBTA. The problems starts at Houston as I have just been quoted $263 for a one day one way hire. I thought it would $40 or so. I don't like bus shuttles as I had hoped to stop at the NASA facility and then on to Galveston for the meet and greet. Any ideas?

People are reporting about renting a car from the airport (i believe avis) and then return the car at Texas City.
The carrental has a shuttle that brings you to Galveston for $40-$50 so maybe that's an option.

I recently used Vista Shuttles RT between IAH and Galveston for two families. The RT rate for the dedicated van (up to 7 people) was less than $250 (yes RT total)
