Too dressy?

Hi everyone I'm a newbie, although I've been lurking for a while!
My parents, my boyfriend and I are going on a 3 night Bahamas cruise in May (we're from the UK) and were wondering if it's possible to be too "dressy"? We've never cruised before and my boyfriend and I's anniversary and we kind of want to make the most of it but don't want to look overly dressed at lunch/dinner as I know there's no formal nights on the 3 night cruisers...

Thanks!

hi, welcome
We did the 3 night bahamas in september and although i would not say it was a very dressy cruise, you are certainly able to dress nicely for dinner

I don't think you can be too dressy especially on formal nights.

Lunch is certainly pretty casual, but for Dinner I don't see any issue being in a suit or jacket and tie. On that short a cruise, I don't think you'll see any Tuxes (unless you want to be mistaken for the head waiter! )

I have a similar question. I want to get some great pictures on this trip. My daughter has her formal dress that she wore in a few pageants. It looks like Cinderella's dress. It is very dressy of course so I was thinking to just get some pictures of her in the dress and my son in his suit. Will she be gawked at, she would not like all of that attention! Are there even photo opps on board like this???

There are photographers around for formal sittings before and after dinner. She might be gawked at, but only because she will look so special. On a 7 night or more cruise you will see long gowns on formal night...not tons, but some.

One of my philosophies in life is that there is no such thing as being overdressed (in any situation). If you happen to look better than everyone else, people will just think that you have some place better to go afterwards.

With respect to the cruise, there will be people who dress respectably, and there will be people who dress like that strange little beauty pageant child on television and her family. No one will think twice if you want to dress up.

Go for it. We love to dress up and don't let other people's apathy dissuade us. I'm very much looking forward to two formal nights on our upcoming 14-nighter! That will be our last chance to dress up for a very long time.

It all depends on what you class as 'too dressy'. I did a 3 night Dream cruise September 2012 and even though there was no formal night (it was 'dress up' night instead), I still took and wore a ball gown. I didn't wear it all night but we got some amazing pictures around the ship. I truly felt like a Disney Princess! Don't worry about being too dressed up, wear what you're comfortable with wearing and never mind what anyone else thinks.

For your boyfriend and fathers happiness YES you can be over dressed. You should only dress in blue jeans and shirts.

Reality Check: On a cruise ship you cannot be over dressed. On Disney it is hard to be over dressed or under dressed. I have seen a husband in blue jeans and a wife in a formal dress. I have also see the wife in a sun-dress and the husband in a tux.

I very rarely dress up at home, but I always bring dresses or a skirt and nice tops to wear to dinner for some of the nights on the cruise. Other "cruise casual" nights, I wear capris and a nice top.

We've seen everything from guys in suits most evenings to extremely casual and generally no-one is really bothered. Just wear what you are comfortable in and enjoy your cruise.
