Polite "no thank you" to characters?

It's just DH and I, no kids, and we go just for the food. I have no idea who the characters are at Hollywood and Vine and I just let them that we don't have kids therefore we really don't know who they are and that we're just there for breakfast. I'm sure their feelings won't be hurt if you were to tell them if they started to approach that your child is shy and or scared, they should just wave and pass by.
