Just an FYI, '1st class' does not seem to mean the same thing in Europe as it does here in the US. 1st class is really just what we would consider a basic Business class, with maybe slightly larger seats, etc. When I went to England & France, I bought myself a first class train ticket for the trip from Winchester to London because it wasn't that much more expensive. The main advantage was that hardly anyone was in the 1st class car! Otherwise, it looked pretty much the same as 2nd class. Then, when ABD took us from London to Paris, the "1st class travel accommodations" were just a bit of an upgrade space-wise, but other than that, not much difference from 2nd class. It appears that the luxurious "1st class" that we think of here is "Business class" in Europe (at least in the UK & France!)

I did this train once a long long time ago....

back in the future wife and I took this train and missed the last one back from Monoco to VF....luckily....a nice couple who had brought their daughter to the station for the same missed train offered to drive us back down to VF. back then....I was not the least bit concerned about our safety...this thread brought back some good memories of that trip!

It tends to matter a bit more on the high speed services, international services, and long haul services. Here's a basic rule of thumb: If the upgraded class has a fancy name ("Business Premier") it usually involves some upgraded services, maybe meals, and comfort. For regional trains called 1st and 2d class, it tends not to matter -- although in some countries on some services there actually is a bit of a difference if you want quiet and more room.

But, the thing is, on the trains where first class (or whatever it's called) are more luxurious, (1) the standard service already is pretty good, and (2) the extra cost is usually not insignificant.

It is forbidden to smoke in public places such as trains, restaurants... in France. And for such a short trip to go to both places first class isnt worth it.
